Please join like-minded “global thinkers” for a monthly discussion on the major political/economic issues that our world is currently experiencing. We will be meeting in person in the semi-private dining room at the Shoal Creek Saloon, 909 N. Lamar. This month’s topic is:
What is the future of the UN in the 21st century?
Is the UN irrelevant as many of its economic and national security responsibilities are handled by military and economic organizations – NATO, the EU, ASEAN, and the QUAD in Asia? While they have a constructive role in the international trade (WTO), they are often simply ignored. Even the composition of the Security Council (countries represented) reflects a politically bi-polar world that doesn’t exist today.
Some would say that the UN (WHO) has been effective with the distribution of the vaccine throughout the pandemic. It has also aided with the humanitarian food crisis caused by both the drought (climate change) and as a result of the war in Ukraine.
What should the role of the UN be in the 21st century – especially with climate change becoming the greatest global threat?
