SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening for Visiting Ceramicist Kuniyuki Shashihara
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with the Austin-Oita Sister Cities Committee and the City of Austin\, an exhibit will feature works by master ceramicist Kuniyuki Sashihara from Oita\, Japan.  Mr. Sashihara will be in residence February 4-18th at the Dougherty Arts Center to create new work for his first U.S exhibitions.  He will also provide lecture-demo opportunities for the public at the Asian American Resource Center\, the Dougherty Arts Center and St. Edward’s University. \nNo RSVP required for this event at Tokyo Electron U.S. Holdings\, 2400 Grove Blvd\, Austin\, TX 78741.  This exhibit at TEL US will run through March 9\, 2017. \n  \nBiography: \nWith 35 years of working with clay\, Mr. Sashihara is known for his expressive and functional pottery.  He describes his current work as being “centered on functional pieces for everyday use\, however\, I experience joy in finding ways to express myself within the confines of this genre. I am inspired by the great masters who have come before me in terms of technique as well as the balance and overall style of my work. I also take inspiration from beautiful natural settings\, sculpture\, and paintings.” \nMr. Sashihara apprenticed in Saga Prefecture in the Arita Yaki style of pottery after graduating from university.  His work is celebrated throughout Japan in both group and solo exhibitions.

DESCRIPTION:Each year\, Academic WorldQuest seeks to inform and engage high school teens and their teachers across the country in global affairs. More than 4\,000 students participate and test their knowledge of international affairs\, global current event issues\, and foreign policy. The winning high school teams at each local competition is invited to participate at the national contest in Washington DC.  Our competition consists of 10 rounds of 10 questions about specific global themes. \nSchools can register teams of 4 students in grades 9 – 12\, however; the contest is especially relevant to students in World Geography\, AP Human Geography and Economics. \nOur competition is scheduled for Saturday\, February 11th at Vandegrift High School\, 9500 McNeil Drive\, Austin TX 78750. \nAWQ is a terrific opportunity to engage your students in global affairs and compete against fellow high school students in the area.  We have had great success and participation in this event in past years and want to make it even bigger this year!

Akrout oversees teams responsible for global operations\, platform and product engineering\, and infrastructure and IT services. In this role\, Akrout is responsible for end-to-end yield\, costs\, quality\, and delivery of new AMD products to customers\, and optimizing business critical infrastructure and IT service/support. \nBefore joining AMD in 2008\, Akrout worked at Freescale Semiconductor as vice president and general manager of the Networking System Division where he focused on networking multi-core and Digital Signal Processing\, driving processor competitiveness in the networking markets.    Prior to Freescale\, he spent 23 years at IBM\, where his last assignment was vice president of Entertainment and Embedded Processor Development and was responsible for the Cell Project developed through a Sony/Toshiba/IBM partnership as well as Xbox 360 processor development for Microsoft and embedded PowerPC processors cores for SoC. \nAkrout holds a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University Pierre & Marie Curie in France\, and a doctorate in electronics and physics. \n\n\n\nHaizril Abd Rahman is the current Director of MIDA Houston and was appointed on November 7\, 2016. He joined the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) in 2008 as an Economics Affair Officer. He served in Electrical & Electronics Industries Division at MIDA headquarters in Kuala Lumpur\, Malaysia before being assigned to MIDA US office in Boston as the Deputy Director in 2014.  Haizril graduated from the University Tenaga Nasional\, Malaysia with a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering. \nThe Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) is the government’s principal agency for the promotion of the manufacturing and services sectors in Malaysia. MIDA assists companies intending to invest in the manufacturing and services sectors\, as well as facilitates the implementation of their projects. SUMMARY:Ambassador Charles Rivkin on the Trans-Pacific Partnership: Opening the World's Most Dynamic Region to U.S. Business
DESCRIPTION:Please join the World Affairs Council of Austin and the U.S. Department of Commerce for a White House Business Council briefing on international trade with Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs Ambassador Charles H. Rivkin. This will be an opportunity for you to ask questions and provide advice about international trade policies and how they affect your business. \nCharles H. Rivkin began serving as Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs on February 13\, 2014\, and was sworn in publicly by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on April 15\, 2014. Rivkin leads the U.S. State Department bureau responsible for managing trade negotiations\, investment treaties\, business and commercial affairs\, economic sanctions\, transportation affairs\, telecommunications policy\, international finance and development related issues\, as well as intellectual property rights protection. In addition\, Rivkin provides guidance to the Department’s 1\,600 economic officers around the world and to the U.S. Mission to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). \nPrior to his appointment\, Rivkin served for more than four years as the U.S. Ambassador to France and Monaco\, leading America’s oldest and one of its largest diplomatic missions\, which contains six constituent posts throughout France and represents over 50 U.S. government agencies. Rivkin’s confirmation marks the first time a U.S. ambassador and former CEO has ever led the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs. \nPrior to his government service\, Ambassador Rivkin worked in the media sector for over 20 years where he served as President and CEO of award-winning entertainment companies such as The Jim Henson Company and Wildbrain. Rivkin helped engineer the sale of The Jim Henson Company in 2000 for nearly $1 billion\, and in 2009\, he was named one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business by Fast Company. \nAmbassador Rivkin received his bachelor’s degree from Yale University in 1984\, graduating with distinction in political science and international relations. He received his M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1988. He was appointed Deputy Director General of the Department of WTO Affairs and the China WTO Notification and Inquiry Center in Nov. 2001\, and was promoted to be Director General of the Department of WTO Affairs and the China WTO Notification and Inquiry Center in Apr. 2005. He was appointed Deputy Representative and Minister (DG-level) of China’s Permanent Mission to the WTO in Jun. 2008 and became Director General of the Department of Policy Research of the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) in Aug. 2011. He joined the General Electric Co. (GE) in 1993 as director for Business Development in China for the company’s diverse set of businesses and then moved to Singapore to assume Asia-wide positions for two GE business units. \nFrisbie repatriated to the United States in 2000\, joining the trade consulting practice established by former US Secretary of Commerce Mickey Kantor at Mayer\, Brown\, Rowe & Maw LLP. \nFrisbie’s China background includes joint-venture negotiations\, trade and investment consulting\, policy analysis and advocacy\, US and PRC government relations\, and media relations. He has spoken at numerous conferences and events and authored reports and articles in the China Business Review\, USCBC’s magazine\, and in other journals such as Current History\, as well as opinion articles in publications such as the Financial Times and the Journal of Commerce. \nFrisbie received his BA and MBA degrees from the University of Texas at Austin.
