SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: Global Art as “Icons of Cultures”
DESCRIPTION:The next Globalist Coffeehouse will be on Thursday\, July 15th\, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Shoal Creek Saloon\, 909 N. Lamar Blvd.  Yes\, it will be in person! See below for the details. \nThe topic will be: Global Art as “Icons of Cultures” \n  \nFor centuries art has played a role in culture – whether religion\, colonialism\, revolution\, and war.  Think about the collecting (some would say looting) of artifacts from South and Central America by the Spanish and Portuguese or Africa and Asia (including the Indian Subcontinent) by colonials and the French and British in the Middle East.  Then there are religious wars and revolutions\, from the art appropriated or destroyed by the Germans in WWII – whatever happened to the famed “Amber room” – to the Taliban destroying the Buddhas of Bamiyan in Afghanistan.  The U.S. has also “played this game\,” if you think about Native American artifacts in our major museum collections. \nSo\, what about more contemporary efforts at repatriation – to locate\, restore and even return artifacts to the original owners or societies? \nJoin us for our first “in person” discussion about this fascinating topic. We are certain that you will all have wonderful stories to tell about experiencing temples\, statuary\, art collections\, and the historical “back-story” of how it ended up on that wall or pedestal. \nRegarding the new location and format. We will be in a private dining room at the Shoal Creek Saloon. It is an Austin “icon” in its own right.  Please check out their website and menu. The discussion will begin at 6:30 p.m. but do come a little early – get a craft beer\, perhaps order something to eat\, and enjoy meeting your fellow “globalists” in person! \n \n

SUMMARY:The Globalist Coffeehouse: The Global Rise of Populism - What Does it Mean for the World’s Democracies?
DESCRIPTION:Over the last decade\, there has been a rise in populist and authoritarian regimes around the world.  From the increasing influence of authoritarian countries like China to  the retreat of democracy across Eurasia and the former Soviet Bloc countries. You have Marine Le Pen and xenophobia in France and Modi in India where the rise of Hindu nationalism threatens Muslims and other minorities. The same trend is found in the Americas and Africa. \nRight-wing populism is not a monolith\, yet there are some common elements: nationalistic traits\, xenophobia\, a tendency towards authoritarianism\, opposition to immigration\, discontent with multi-culturalism/social liberalism and an anti-elitist message. \nSo what is the solution? How do democracies address this trend? While the focus of our discussion will be mostly global\, some would also suggest that recently even the U.S. has been experiencing a similar process. \nPlease join us for what will certainly be a lively conversation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more details contact:\nEllen Murry\, WAC Advisory Board\nellen.murry@yahoo.com\nPolina Anastassieva\, WAC Management Team\npolina@wacaustin.org

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: Food Diplomacy
DESCRIPTION:Please join like-minded “global thinkers” for a monthly discussion on the major political/economic issues that our world is currently experiencing. Depending on COVID-19 numbers\, we hope to host an in-person series of the Globalist in June or July! \nThis month’s topic is:\nFood Diplomacy \n“Food Diplomacy” can be described as an interesting international business strategy that can bring countries together or even divide them. Think back to the days when kings would host banquets and lure their enemies to share secrets. At the same time\, food has also brought us closer. Think about all the varying restaurants and neighborhoods in our country – Thai\, Persian\, Indian\, even Italian. \nWhat about cultural and religious food taboos in business and diplomacy?  What is the role of food as “soft power” or food scarcity as a source of conflict\, especially as we face the impact of climate change? Let’s discuss some of your own business and personal culinary experiences abroad. Food always has and will be a common denominator amidst all our differences. \n \nFor more details contact: \n  \nEllen Murry\, WAC Advisory Board \nellen.murry@yahoo.com \nPolina Anastassieva\, WAC management team \npolina@wacaustin.org

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse on the Quad and its Role in the Indo-Pacific
DESCRIPTION:The Austin World Affairs Council\, in association with the San Antonio WAC Young Professionals\, will host the Globalist Coffeehouse on Thursday\, April 15th\, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. The topic is:  \n \n\n\nThe “Quad” and its role in the Indo-Pacific as a counterbalance to China.\nRecently\, the Quad has been in the news. Since 2004 the “Quadrilateral Security Dialogue\,” composed of Australia\, India\, Japan\, and the US\, has been meeting informally and conducting joint regional military exercises. \nNow China’s politically motived sanctions of Australian commodities\, Japan’s alarm over incursions by the Chinese Navy into disputed waters in the East China Sea\, and a deadly clash between India and China in the Himalayas have all caused relations between the Quad countries and China to plummet. \nPresident Biden recently hosted a summit of the Quad to address China’s assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region. What are the next steps in the process? Will the Quad evolve into an organization along the line of NATO as a counterbalance to China? Will the Quad be able to demonstrate that they can address and even solve the economic\, transnational\, and environmental challenges in the Indo-Pacific region? \nPlease join us\, along with the San Antonio WAC Young Professionals\, in what will be a very interesting discussion on the future of everyone’s relationship to China. \nJeffery Tunis will provide an introduction to this topic. He is a retired foreign service officer who had numerous postings throughout Asia and will bring a very insightful focus to the conversation.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEllen Murry\, WAC Advisory Board\n\nellen.murry@yahoo.com\n\nPolina Anastassieva\, WAC management team\npolina@wacaustin.org

SUMMARY:Walter Isaacson: The Code Breaker - Jennifer Doudna\, Gene Editing and the Future of the Human Race
DESCRIPTION:The World Affairs Council of Austin is pleased to partner with the World Affairs Council of Greater Houston in hosting David Rubenstein in a discussion with Walter Isaacson on his new book\, The Code Breaker: Jennifer Doudna\, Gene Editing and the Future of the Human Race.  The bestselling author of Leonardo da Vinci and Steve Jobs returns with a gripping account of how Nobel Prize winner Jennifer Doudna and her colleagues launched a revolution that will allow us to cure diseases\, fend off viruses\, and have healthier babies. \nWhen Jennifer Doudna was in sixth grade\, she came home one day to find that her dad had left a paperback titled The Double Helix on her bed. She put it aside\, thinking it was one of those detective tales she loved. When she read it on a rainy Saturday\, she discovered she was right\, in a way. As she sped through the pages\, she became enthralled by the intense drama behind the competition to discover the code of life. Even though her high school counselor told her girls didn’t become scientists\, she decided she would. \nDriven by a passion to understand how nature works and to turn discoveries into inventions\, she would help to make what the book’s author\, James Watson\, told her was the most important biological advance since his co-discovery of the structure of DNA. She and her collaborators turned a curiosity of nature into an invention that will transform the human race: an easy-to-use tool that can edit DNA. Known as CRISPR\, it opened a brave new world of medical miracles and moral questions. \nThe development of CRISPR and the race to create vaccines for coronavirus will hasten our transition to the next great innovation revolution. The past half-century has been a digital age\, based on the microchip\, computer\, and internet. Now we are entering a life-science revolution. Children who study digital coding will be joined by those who study genetic code. \nShould we use our new evolution-hacking powers to make us less susceptible to viruses? What a wonderful boon that would be! And what about preventing depression? Hmmm…Should we allow parents\, if they can afford it\, to enhance the height or muscles or IQ of their kids? \nAfter helping to discover CRISPR\, Doudna became a leader in wrestling with these moral issues and\, with her collaborator Emmanuelle Charpentier\, won the Nobel Prize in 2020. Her story is a thrilling detective tale that involves the most profound wonders of nature\, from the origins of life to the future of our species. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER \nWalter Isaacson\, a professor of history at Tulane\, has been CEO of the Aspen Institute\, chair of CNN\, and editor of Time. The bestselling author of Leonardo da Vinci and Steve Jobs returns with a gripping account of how Nobel Prize winner Jennifer Doudna and her colleagues launched a revolution that will allow us to cure diseases\, fend off viruses\, and have healthier babies. He is also the author The Innovators;  Einstein: His Life and Universe; Benjamin Franklin: An American Life; and Kissinger: A Biography\, and the coauthor of The Wise Men: Six Friends and the World They Made. Visit him at Isaacson.Tulane.edu \nABOUT THE MODERATOR \nDavid M. Rubenstein is a Co-Founder and Co-Chairman of The Carlyle Group\, one of the world’s largest and most successful private investment firms. Mr. Rubenstein co-founded the firm in 1987. Since then\, Carlyle has grown into a firm managing $246 billion from 29 offices around the world. \nMr. Rubenstein is Chairman of the Boards of Trustees of the John F. SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse on the Future of Currencies
DESCRIPTION:The future of currencies in a digitalized world.  \nAs e-commerce has come to the forefront of how we purchase goods and services\, digital currencies such as Bitcoin have risen as a means of exchange for payment. Bitcoin\, unlike other currencies\, is not regulated\, and therefore its value has skyrocketed. Throughout recent history\, we have relied on banking institutions to hold our money\, but what happens when they are no longer needed? Can we rely on digital currency on the same scale? Banks are ensured; but how are we supposed to trust digital currency? What about security issues with digital services\, i.e.\, breaches and hacks? There have been numerous “boom and bust” economic cycles in the past. Are Bitcoin and similar entities the future or a potential bust?\n\nWhat about your own personal experience? Have you or your friends invested in digital currencies like Bitcoin? Would you do so in the future and under what circumstances?\n\n\n\nFor more details contact:\nEllen Murry\, WAC Advisory Board\nellen.murry@yahoo.com\nPolina Anastassieva\, WAC Management Team\npolina@wacaustin.org

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse
DESCRIPTION:Please join like-minded “global thinkers” for a monthly discussion on the major political/economic issues that our world is currently experiencing. \nThursday\, February 25th\, 6:30 -7:30 p.m. \nThis month’s topic will be: \n“US” in the 21st Century \nThe retrenchment from global leadership over the last few years has caused many to question and possibly reassess U.S. global leadership. Do you think that they still feel the same way today?   Please join us for what will be a very interesting and lively discussion. \nInitially this event will be a virtual zoom discussion. \nTo register and receive the zoom invitation\, please click below: \n \nFor more details contact: \n  \nEllen Murry\, WAC Advisory Board \nellen.murry@yahoo.com \nPolina Anastassieva\, WAC management team \npolina@wacaustin.org

SUMMARY:The Globalist Coffeehouse
DESCRIPTION:Please join like-minded “global thinkers” for a monthly discussion on the major political/economic issues that our world is currently experiencing. \nInitially this event will be a virtual zoom discussion with break out groups. \nThis month’s topic will be:\nThe Middle East – Challenges and Opportunities.  \nWe now have a new administration which will face opportunities but also challenges in the Middle East almost immediately upon taking office. With Turkey\, we have a NATO member often aligning itself with Russia. In Israel\, we have territorial expansionism with domestic uncertainty. \nAnd then there is Iran\, where provocations abound – from seizing a Korean tanker in the Strait of Hormuz to increasing their uranium enrichment quota – in a response to US sanctions. While in Saudi Arabia and some of the Gulf States\, there is a rapprochement with Israel over the perceived Iranian/Shia threat. \nWhat should our priorities be in addressing these issues? Dr. Roy Casagranda\, with Austin Community College\, and an expert on the Middle East\, will join us initially and provide a brief context to begin what will be a very lively discussion.\nTo register and receive the zoom invitation\, please click here.\nFor more details contact: \nEllen Murry\, WAC Advisory Board\nellen.murry@yahoo.com \nPolina Anastassieva\, WAC Management Team\npolina@wac.org

SUMMARY:The Globalist Coffeehouse
DESCRIPTION:Please join like-minded “global thinkers” for a lively monthly discussion on the major political/economic issues that our world is currently experiencing. \n6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. \nThis month’s topic will be:\n\n\nClimate Change/Global Warming – we know the problem\, but what are the potential solutions? \nClimate Change/Global Warming has been called an “existential threat” that must be addressed. The question is how? We are increasingly aware of the symptoms – the list is endless. Yet\, the solutions are varied and complex. Fossil fuels represent only 25% of the contribution to greenhouse gasses. What about the other 75%?  In a global sense\, if cows were a country\, they would be the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases (methane). What about the impact of manufacturing – plastic\, steel\, and cement? Cement production releases huge quantities of carbon dioxide.  There are dire implications for the world’s people\, especially for those in less developed countries\, and those most impacted by drought and changing weather patterns like monsoons or intense weather phenomena. Among the world’s poor\, who will have access to air conditioning\, potable water\, and drought-resistant seeds?  We need to reconsider how we make things\, grow food\, and move people and goods. What are your ideas? As members of a global community\, what should be our priorities in the next decade? \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInitially\, this event will be a virtual zoom discussion with break out-groups.\n\nPolina Anastassieva polina@wacaustin.org
