He is ACC’s Middle East Affairs expert. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. He is the founder and president of the Austin School\, lecture series. \nHis research interests lie at the intersection of politics\, history\, economics\, psychology\, and philosophy. He is a firm believer in a multidisciplinary approach. Circa 1025 A.D. Ibn Sina (Avicenna) said\, “The knowledge of anything\, since all things have causes\, is not acquired or complete unless it is known by its causes.” \nIn addition to his responsibilities at ACC\, from September 2010 until early 2012 he wrote regularly for Merhnameh\, a leading Tehran-based reformist socio-political monthly on US and Arab politics and history\, until the magazine was shut down by the Islamic Republic.  He has also written articles for Hamshahri and Donya-e-Eqtesad Daily newspapers in Iran.  In the US he has written for the Austin American Statesman on the Arab Spring. \nDr. Casagranda will have just returned from Saudi Arabia and Bahrain\, and consequently\, should bring a very interesting perspective on the Hamas-Israeli conflict. \n\nParking at Neill-Cochran House House Museum: Free in the museum lot\, accessible via 23rd between Leon and San Gabriel; additional street parking available.

Mosser is at the University of Texas with a joint appointment in the Department of Government\, the Center for European Studies (CES)\, and the International Relations and Global Studies (IRG) program. He is the Executive Director of the Global Disinformation Lab (GDIL)\, the Assistant Director of the Center for European Studies (CES)\, as well as a Distinguished Scholar at the Robert S. Strauss Center for International Security and Law. Whether it’s a cat\, a dog\, a parrot\, a bunny\, or even a goat\, we all communicate with our animals. One interesting aspect of this subject is that it’s not necessarily in English that we talk to them; it might be Spanish\, Hindi\, Hebrew\, Italian\, or any other language for that matter. Pets adapt to whatever style of communication their owners use. So\, if you begin speaking to your animal in one language versus another\, they’ll most likely get used to it. For example\, we know that dogs listen to commands\, and it’s the intonation of the voice that tells them what kind of command it is\, however\, there is a significant difference between saying “Stay” in English versus let’s say in French.  \nWhat are your experiences with your furry loved ones? W. Bush Foundation for U.S.- China Relations will speak on the current state of and future prospects for the U.S.- China relationship and answer audience questions about recent developments.\n\nDavid J. Firestein serves as president and CEO of the George H. W. Dr. O’Neil will be explain why regionalization\, not globalization\, has been the biggest economic trend of the last forty years. \nShannon K. O’Neil is an expert on global trade\, supply chains\, Mexico\, Latin America\, and democracy. Dr. O’Neil has lived and worked in Mexico and Argentina. She was a Fulbright scholar and a justice\, welfare\, and economics fellow at Harvard University\, and has taught Latin American politics at Columbia University. Before turning to policy\, Dr. O’Neil worked in the private sector as an equity analyst at Indosuez Capital and Credit Lyonnais Securities. \nDr. O’Neil is the author of The Globalization Myth: Why Regions Matter (Yale University Press\, October 2022)\, which chronicles the rise of three main global manufacturing and supply chain hubs and what they mean for U.S. economic competitiveness. She also wrote Two Nations Indivisible: Mexico\, the United States\, and the Road Ahead (Oxford University Press\, 2013)\, which analyzes the political\, economic\, and social transformations Mexico has undergone over the last three decades and why they matter for the United States. Dr. O’Neil is a columnist for Bloomberg Opinion and a frequent guest on national broadcast news and radio programs. She has often testified before Congress and regularly speaks at global academic\, business\, and policy conferences. \nDr. O’Neil is a member of the board of directors of the Tinker Foundation. She holds a PhD in government from Harvard University\, an MA in international relations from Yale University\, and a BA from Yale University.

This month’s topic is: \nThe future of AI\nArtificial Intelligence\, or AI\, technology has transformed how we live\, study\, what entertainment we enjoy\, and now it’s progressed into our jobs. Organizations that have added machine learning and cognitive interactions to traditional business models and processes can greatly improve user experience and boost productivity. ChatGPT or Google’s Bert for instance\, can produce summary analyses on a range of topics including writing computer code\, producing art\, composing music\, and even providing legal advice all in a matter of minutes to hours. \nAI has been around formally since the 1950’s when it was defined as a machine’s ability to perform a task that would’ve previously required human intelligence. But many are now issuing stark warnings. The co-founders of Center for Humane Technology spoke about their concerns stating that the initial thought of AI is to enrich our society\, cure diseases such as cancer\, climate solutions\, etc. However\, when it becomes an arms race versus actual thorough testing simply to have the machines deployed as fast as possible\, nothing positive will come from it. \nThe Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence warned the public of the risks AI brings and the need for stronger collaboration among the world’s leaders. In March\, a collection of tech officials\, scientists and policymakers signed an open letter calling for a 6-month moratorium on production of new AI models. If the private sector won’t do so voluntarily\, then they want the governments “to step in and institute a moratorium.” \nWe are at the point of a breakthrough technological advancement\, but what does it mean for the future? How will it impact society? Prior to her retirement Ms. Kavanagh was the Director of Recruitment\nin the Bureau of Global Talent Management\, where she led a team of thirty recruiters across the\ncountry to develop and implement a five-year recruitment strategy for the Department of State.\nShe also advised senior Department leadership on recruitment challenges and obstacles. She was\ninformed by her experience as Diplomat-in-Residence for Texas\, where she served from 2017-\n2019\, recruiting Texans to join the Department of State.\nPrior to coming to Texas\, Ms. Kavanagh was the Acting Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S.\nMission to China from January 2017 to June 2017. She was also Minister Counselor for\nConsular Affairs in China from 2015-2017\, where she managed a team of 600 consular\nprofessionals\, generating $500 million in annual income with a combined operating budget of\n$50 million. She advised the U.S. Ambassador to China on matters of consular policy and\noperations and served as a key member of the Embassy’s senior leadership team.\nMs. Kavanagh served a similar role as the Minister Counselor for Consular Affairs in Moscow\,\nRussia from 2013-2015\, where she also was the U.S. government’s Senior Officer in Charge\nduring the Sochi Olympics. She has also served in Taiwan\, Singapore\, Colombia\, Brazil\, and\nWashington.\nMs. Kavanagh grew up in North Canton\, Ohio. She graduated summa cum laude from\nGeorgetown University and has a Master’s Degree in Latin American Studies from the\nUniversity of Chicago. She speaks Mandarin\, Spanish\, Portuguese\, and some Russian. She is\nthe recipient of four Superior Honor awards and four Meritorious Honor awards\, as well as the\n2006 Assistant Secretary’s Award for leadership.

DESCRIPTION:The World Affairs Council of Austin and the University of Texas Center for European Studies invite you to this special documentary screening and conversation with the Honorable Robert Hull\, Consul General of Ireland in Austin for a commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement. \nThe documentary tells the story of the Northern Ireland Women’s Coalition\, an all-female\, cross-community political party established in Northern Ireland in 1996. The NIWC was formed to contest elections to the Northern Ireland Forum for Political Dialogue as part of the process of negotiations that eventually led to the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. \n‘Wave Goodbye to Dinosaurs’ focuses on the conscious decision the Northern Ireland Women’s Coalition made to ensure women were written into\, rather than written out of\, this moment in history – often in the face of significant opposition and challenge. They had a direct impact on the drafting of the Good Friday Agreement\, including ensuring that the suffering of victims of the Troubles was acknowledged and addressed. \nThere has been a change on the room were the screening will take place tomorrow. SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: What’s ahead for the global banking/investment economy and consequently governments?
DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting in the private dining room at 5280 Burger and Taproom\, 7032 Wood Hollow Dr. This month’s topic is:  \nWhat’s ahead for the global banking/investment economy and consequently governments?\nLast month two banks\, Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank had to be “bailed out” with quick action by the Federal Reserve to stabilize the situation. There were other regional banks – like First Republic – “teetering on the brink” of financial failure and had to also be rescued. Finally\, there was the global banking situation with Credit Suisse being taken over by UBS\, while in Germany investors were watching Deutsche Bank. Many thought that HSBC may also be vulnerable\, impacting the economies in Asia. \nThere are several factors that may have contributed to the crisis. In the U.S.\, under the previous administration\, banking restrictions imposed after the 2008 crisis were removed for mid-sized regional banks. There was the role of “start-ups” and the “crypto sector” dominating a bank’s assets\, and finally the Federal Reserve’s policy of raising interest rates to reduce inflation. Similar situations also held for the global banking community. The pandemic\, the cost of the War in Ukraine\, and the disruption of global supply chains – especially food and energy – were all contributing factors at the international level. In the UK\, the implications of Brexit continue to be “a shock to the UK economy” and in the EU there is the economic stress of “shadow banks” (non-banking financial institutions). And last\, there is still the “contagion risk\,” where one institution or region could drag down the global economy. \nThe head of the IMF (International Monetary Fund) has said that “the global economy faces risks to financial security because of the turbulence in the banking sector.” So\, what’s next? How should this be addressed by the Federal Reserve in the U.S.\, and by institutions in the rest of the international banking community?
