SUMMARY:The Firebird: The Elusive Fate of Russian Democracy
DESCRIPTION:EVENT POSTPONED DUE TO EUROPEAN TRAVEL LIMITATIONS \n  \nThe World Affairs Council of Austin\, the Wilson Center’s Kennan Institute\, the Kozmetsky Center of Excellence at St Edwards University\, and Center for Russian\, East European and Eurasian Sudies at the University of Texas are pleased to present the Kennan Conversation with Andrei Kozyrev.  Mr. Kozyrev will provide attendees with an eyewitness account of the collapse of the Soviet Union\, the struggle to create a democratic Russia in its place\, and how the promise of a better future led to the tragic outcome that changed our world forever. \nAndrei Kozyrev was foreign minister of Russia under President Boris Yeltsin from August 1991 to January 1996. During the August 1991 coup attempt against Mikhail Gorbachev\, he was present when tanks moved in to seize the Russian White House\, where Boris Yeltsin famously stood on a tank to address the crowd assembled. He then departed to Paris to muster international support and\, if needed\, to form a Russian government-in-exile. He participated in the negotiations at Brezhnev’s former hunting lodge in Belazheva\, Belarus where the leaders of Russia\, Ukraine\, and Belarus agreed to secede from the Soviet Union and form a Commonwealth of Independent States. Kozyrev’s pro-Western orientation made him an increasingly unpopular figure in Russia as Russia’s spiraling economy and the emergence of ultra-wealthy oligarchs soured ordinary Russians on Western ideas of democracy and market capitalism. \n  \nAbout the Kennan Conversation \nFor 45 years\, the Wilson Center’s Kennan Institute has worked to improve American understanding of Russia and the surrounding region. Located in Washington\, DC\, the Institute is the nation’s premier national research center devoted to Russia\, producing policy relevant knowledge\, and providing a non-partisan environment to study and debate issues concerning the region. Starting in 2016\, the Kennan Institute recognized the need to connect directly with audiences outside of the Washington beltway to answer their questions about Russia. \nThe Kennan Conversation program takes our experts on Russia and the region to meet with and engage local audiences across the United States who are fascinated by what they read and hear in the news\, but often do not have the opportunity to hear directly from leading experts. We seek out local partners to identify audiences and conduct outreach to local media and other groups interested in learning more about this part of the world.

DESCRIPTION:The World Affairs Council of Austin welcomes Nicholas Kralev\, Executive Director of the Washington International Diplomatic Academy\, who will discuss the shifting role and impact of diplomacy in a world in disarray. \nNicholas Kralev is an author\, journalist and entrepreneur specializing in diplomacy and international affairs\, whose work of more than 20 years has taken him to almost 100 countries. \nHe is the founding executive director of the Washington International Diplomatic Academy\, an independent organization that provides practical professional training in diplomacy and international affairs. \nA former Financial Times and Washington Times diplomatic correspondent\, he witnessed firsthand the conduct of American diplomacy while accompanying U.S. Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton\, Condoleezza Rice\, Colin Powell and Madeleine Albright on their travels around the world. \nHe is the author of “America’s Other Army” and “Diplomats in the Trenches\,” as well as the host of the TV series on diplomacy “Conversations with Nicholas Kralev.” His work has been published in The New York Times\, The Atlantic\, Foreign Policy Magazine and the Huffington Post. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER your high school team by February 7th if your team is ready to compete in the Central Texas Academic WorldQuest™ (AWQ) competition on Saturday February 22\, 2020. \nEach year\, Academic WorldQuest™ seeks to inform and engage high school teens and their teachers across the country in global affairs. More than 4\,000 students participate and test their knowledge of international affairs\, global current events\, and foreign policy. The winning high school teams at each local competition becomes eligible to participate at the national contest in Washington DC.  Our competition consists of 10 rounds of 10 questions about specific global themes.  Each team is comprised of currently enrolled students from the same high school.  All high schools located in our five-county metro region (Bastrop\, Caldwell\, Hays\, Travis and Williamson) are eligble to send a team to compete. \nThe partner organizations for the 2020 competition are the World Affairs Council of Austin\, the Center for European Studies\, and Hemispheres: The International Outreach Consortium at the University of Texas at Austin. \nWhat is it? \nAcademic WorldQuest™ is a flagship youth education program of the national network of World Affairs Councils. It is a team competition that engages more than 4\,000 high school students annually across the United States to test their knowledge of global issues and foreign policy. SUMMARY:Strategic Security Challenges in the Middle East: Perspectives on a ‘Second Arab Spring’ and the U.S.-Iran Confrontation
DESCRIPTION:The World Affairs Council of Austin is pleased to partner with the Kozmetsky Center at St. Edward’s University in offering a presentation by Theodore “Ted” Karasik\, PhD\, Senior Advisor at Gulf State Analytics.  Dr. Karasik will share his perspective on the security challenges in the Middle East\, the potential of a Second “Arab Spring” and the recent diplomatic and military confrontation between the United States and Iran. \nFor the past 30 years\, Dr. Karasik worked for several U.S. agencies involved in researching and analyzing defense acquisitions\, the use of military power\, and religio-political issues across the Middle East and Eurasia including the evolution of violent extremism and financing networks. From 2006 until 2016\, Dr.Karasik lived in Dubai\, UAE where he worked on Arabian Peninsula foreign policy and security issues surrounding cultural awareness\, cybersecurity\, maritime security\, counter-terrorism\, and infrastructure and national resilience. \nDr. Karasik was formerly a Senior Political Scientist in the International Policy and Security Group at RAND Corporation serving as Director of Research for the RAND Center for Middle East Public Policy. He earned his PhD in History from the University of California\, Los Angeles in four fields: Middle East\, Russia\, the Caucasus with additional concentration in Cultural Anthropology focusing on tribes and clans from Central Asia to East Africa. Dr. Karasik has been a frequent commentator for major Arab news media (Al Arabiya\, Al Jazeera\, Sky News Arabia\, and others).

DESCRIPTION:The World Affairs Council of Austin is pleased to partner with the Kozmetsky Center at St. Edward’s University in welcoming U.S. Army Major General (Ret.) Mari K. Eder\, PhD to Austin.  Dr. Eder will assess the erosion in confidence regarding public information and suggesting ways that we might safeguard society from disinformation. \nMaj. Gen. Eder will share her perspective on the media and information in influencing perceptions of institutions\, public leaders and elections.  The lecture will analyze developments in the information space for national security and the future of warfare.  Maj. Gen. Eder will offer suggestions on how policymakers and society might respond to challenges in obtaining credible information or limiting vulnerability to deliberate attempts on the part of domestic and foreign sources or adversaries to shape perceptions with non-factual information. \nMajor General Eder served as the Army’s Deputy Chief of Public Affairs\, Commanding General of the U.S. Army Reserve Joint and Special Troops Support Command\, Deputy Chief of the Army Reserve\,  leader of the Army Reserve Ambassador Program\, Director of Public Affairs at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies\, and professor and lecturer in communications and public diplomacy at the NATO School in Germany and Sweden’s International Training Command.  She was inducted into the Army Public Affairs Hall of Fame in 2017 and received the Joe Galloway Lifetime Achievement Award for excellence in strategic communication. In addition to numerous military awards and recognition\, Maj. Gen. Eder received the Vatican award of the Knight\, Grand Cross of the Order of Saint Gregory the Great from Pope Benedict XVI in 2011. \nMaj. Gen. Eder’s book\, Leading the Narrative: The Case for Strategic Communication\, is used in university communication courses\, and she is the author of numerous case studies and articles on strategic communication topics. He served as Ambassador to the Hellenic Republic and the Republic of Serbia (2012 – 2014); Senior Counsellor and Chargé d’Affaires  in the Republic of Finland (2008 – 2012); Head of First European Division\, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2005 – 2008); Counselor and DCM of the Permanent Mission of Georgia to the U.N. (2002—2005); advisor in the National Security Council of Georgia covering Human Rights\, Information and Analysis\, Law Enforcement Institutions (1997 – 2002); staff member in the press office for the office of the President of Georgia (1996 – 1997). Ambassador Bakradze graduated from Tbilisi State University with a degree in International Economic Relations and International Law. He speaks Georgian\, English and Russian.

DESCRIPTION:The World Affairs Council of Austin in partnership with the Kozmetsky Center is pleased to have Dr. DJ Peterson\, Founder of Longview Global Advisors in Austin.  Dr. Peterson will share his perspective on the looming U.S.-China trade war;  U.S-Mexico/Latin America business and trade relations in the context of hardened border policies; the use of tariffs to achieve American global strategic priorities in the Middle East\, East Asia and Latin America; and Brexit’s impact on the European Union’s cohesion and prospects for a bilateral U.S.-U.K. trade agreement.  We have also asked Dr. Peterson to offer advice on courses and professional internship opportunities for students considering careers in international business\, economics and finance.  Dr. Peterson’s lecture\, sponsored in cooperation with World Affairs Council Austin\, will be held in the Jones Global Events Center on the St. Edward’s University campus from 7:00-9:00 PM. \n \nIn 2013\,   Dr. Peterson has advised firms across a range of sectors\, including financial services\, consumer goods\, automotive\, industrial products\, energy and mining\, life sciences\, technology and telecommunications. From 2006 to 2012\, he led the Corporate Advisory Services practice at Eurasia Group\, where he and his team of 13 business developers and client-relationship managers served large-cap clients in North America\, Europe\, and Japan. Dr. Peterson also founded and led the firm’s Operating Committee driving growth in areas such as business development\, client services\, product innovation\, business planning\, project management\, and human capital. From 1998 to 2006\, he served on the staff at the RAND Corporation where he directed major research projects in technology futures\, natural resources management\, homeland security\, and other global security policy topic areas. In addition\, Dr. Peterson organized and led RAND’s Environment\, Energy and Economic Development Program.  Dr. Peterson received his BA from Duke University and PhD in Political Science from UCLA. SUMMARY:Annual Fiesta de El Grito de Independencia
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with the Consulate General of Mexico\, the Austin-Saltillo Sister City Committee\,  the City of Austin\, Univision\, the State Preservation Board\, and the Mexican American Legislative Caucus\, Austin’s annual Fiesta de El Grito de Independencia is a musical celebration and historical re-enactment of Mexico’s call for independence from Spain.  The event takes place each year on the South Steps of the State Capitol. \nThe Fiesta de El Grito\, located on the grounds of the State Capitol since 2013\, has drawn crowds of over 10\,000. \nThis family-oriented celebration is alcohol free.
