SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse - China: What next collaboration\, competition\, conflict?
DESCRIPTION:China:  What’s next – collaboration\, competition\, or conflict?\nWith China and the U.S. dominating the world’s economies\, what will China’s role be globally? There is China in the Indo-Pacific – the South China Sea and Taiwan?  What are the lessons learned from Putin’s war in Ukraine? Then there is “soft power” with the  Belt and Road Initiatives. What about China internally? There is the stagnation of the Chinese economy\, the implications of an aging workforce\, and a recent phenomenon called “lying flat.” There is also internal dissension with persecuted minorities/religious sects\, like the Uyghurs and others. \nThis Globalist Coffeehouse will be a follow-up to a joint program earlier this month with the World Affairs Council of San Antonio. This “China Town Hall” featured presentations by some of the most knowledgeable scholars on this topic.  Please join us for what will be a very timely and wide-ranging discussion.

SUMMARY:ONLINE Lincoln\, Democracy & The American Experiment with Princeton Professor\, Allen Guelzo
DESCRIPTION:Hosted in partnership with the World Affairs Council of Connecticut and Global Santa Fe\, the World Affairs Council of Austin invites you to this ONLINE event on Lincoln’s birthday with award-winning historian and author Allen Guelzo. Mr. Guelzo will join a conversation with Jim Falk on the American President whose firm and powerful beliefs in democracy guided him through one of the most tumultuous periods in American history – and how his beliefs continue to shape our country. \nAbout the Book\nOur Ancient Faith: Lincoln\, Democracy\, and the American Experiment \nAn intimate study of Abraham Lincoln’s powerful vision of democracy\, which guided him through the Civil War and is still relevant today—by a best-selling historian and three-time winner of the Lincoln Prize. \nAbraham Lincoln grappled with the greatest crisis of democracy that has ever confronted the United States. While many books have been written about his temperament\, judgment\, and steady hand in guiding the country through the Civil War\, we know less about Lincoln’s penetrating ideas and beliefs about democracy\, which were every bit as important as his character in sustaining him through the crisis. \nAllen C. Guelzo\, one of America’s foremost experts on Lincoln\, captures the president’s firmly held belief that democracy was the greatest political achievement in human history. He shows how Lincoln’s deep commitment to the balance between majority and minority rule enabled him to stand firm against secession while also committing the Union to reconciliation rather than recrimination in the aftermath of war. In bringing his subject to life as a rigorous and visionary thinker\, Guelzo assesses Lincoln’s actions on civil liberties and his views on race\, and explains why his vision for the role of government would have made him a pivotal president even if there had been no Civil War. Our Ancient Faith gives us a deeper understanding of this endlessly fascinating man and shows how his ideas are still sharp and relevant more than 150 years later. \nPurchase Our Ancient Faith here. \n\n\n\nAbout the Author\nAllen C. Guelzo is Senior Research Scholar at the Council of the Humanities at Princeton University. He is the author of several books about the Civil War and early-nineteenth-century American history. He is a recipient of the Guggenheim-Lehrman Prize for Military History and has been awarded the Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize three times. He lives in Pennsylvania. \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Moderator\nJim Falk is President Emeritus of the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth. Now residing in Santa Fe\, New Mexico he is member of the Board of Global Santa Fe where he chairs the program committee. Jim co-hosts Perspectives Matter\, a McCuistion Program\, that airs weekly on KERA-Dallas (PBS). He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: Global Regulation on AI\, Cybersecurity\, & Data Protection
DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting in person in the semi-private dining room at the Shoal Creek Saloon\, 909 N. Lamar. This month’s topic is: \nGlobal Regulation on AI\, Cybersecurity\, & Data Protection \nPersonal data protection\, also known as data privacy\, is a holistic approach to system design that incorporates legal\, administrative\, and technical safeguards for personal health information (PHI) and personally identifiable information (PII). \nHow does data protection vary from country to country? What universal regulations do you find would be beneficial to implement across the globe? What about the constant evolution of global cyber-terrorism and hacking\, i.e. “Scattered Spider\,” “Lazarus Group\,” and even “Dragonfly\,”and the role of Cybersecurity? And then there is AI\, as it relates to Cybersecurity. The Global entities managing AI (UN\, EU\, ICC\, etc.) – who has and will have the ultimate control? \nShould data breaches be categorized as a crime with minimum time served? What measures have you seen or learned about that you would like to implement across the board? \nPlease join us at the Shoal Creek Saloon for what will be a very interesting discussion. \n \nFor more details contact: \nEllen Murry\, Co-chair\, of the Globalist Coffeehouse: ellen@wacaustin.org \nPolina Anastassieva\, Co-chair\, of the Globalist Coffeehouse: polina@wacaustin.org

Presented in partnership with the Dallas Committee on Foreign Relations\, Phoenix Committee on Foreign Relations\, World Affairs Council of Albuquerque\, World Affairs Council of Austin\, World Affairs Council of Charlotte\, World Affairs Council of Colorado Springs\, World Affairs Council of Hampton Roads\, World Affairs Council of Jacksonville\, World Affairs Council of Orange County\, World Affairs Council of Western Massachusetts\, WorldOregon\, and Perspectives Matter. \nAbout the Book\nThe End of Ambition: America’s Past\, Present and Future in the Middle East by Steven Cook \nA clear-headed vision for the United States’ role in the Middle East that highlights the changing nature of US national interests and the challenges of grand strategizing at a time of profound change in the international order. \nFollowing a long series of catastrophic misadventures in the Middle East over the last two decades\, the American foreign policy community has tried to understand what went wrong. After weighing the evidence\, they have mostly advised a retreat from the region. The basic view is that when the United States tries to advance change in the Middle East\, it only makes matters worse. \nIn The End of Ambition\, Steven A. Cook argues that while these analysts are rightly concerned that engagement drains US resources and distorts its domestic politics\, the broader impulse to disengage tends to neglect important lessons from the past. Moreover\, advocates of pulling back overlook the potential risks of withdrawal. Covering the relationship between the US and the Middle East since the end of WWII\, Cook makes the bold claim that despite setbacks and moral costs\, the United States has been overwhelmingly successful in protecting its core national interests in the Middle East. Conversely\, overly ambitious policies to remake the region and leverage US power not only ended in failure\, but rendered the region unstable in new and largely misunderstood ways. \nWhile making the case that retrenchment is not the answer to America’s problems in the Middle East\, The End of Ambition highlights how America’s interests in the region have begun to change and critically examines alternative approaches to US-Middle East policy. Cook highlights the challenges that policymakers and analysts confront developing a new strategy for the United States in the Middle East against the backdrop of both political uncertainty in the United States and a changing global order. \nPurchase The End of Ambition here. \nAbout the Author\nSteven A. Cook is Eni Enrico Mattei senior fellow for Middle East and Africa studies and director of the International Affairs Fellowship for Tenured International Relations Scholars at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: The Middle East – What is the Region's Future and the Role of the U.S.?
DESCRIPTION:Please join like-minded “global thinkers” for a monthly discussion on the major political/economic issues our world is experiencing. This month’s topic will be the Middle East. We will meet in the private dining room at 5280 Burger and Taphouse\, 7032 Wood Hollow Dr.\nThe Middle East – what is the region’s future and the role of the U.S.? \nThe Middle East is in a transition period with serious consequences beyond the region. From Israel’s war in Gaza\, Lebanon and the role of Iran\, Egypt\, the Emirates\, Saudi Arabia\, Turkey\, and even the Russians and Chinese\, the future of the region is uncertain\, especially the goal of a “two-state solution” given the Jewish settlements in the West Bank. \nLast month\, Dr. Steven Cook spoke to our WAC chapter on the Middle East in a Zoom program with WorldNewsNow. He is the author of the book “The End of Ambition: America’s Past\, Present and Future in the Middle East.” He suggests choosing priorities “based on interests that are achievable at an acceptable cost.” Dr. Cook recommends the phase-out of U.S. Military aid over the next decade while agreeing to treaties and agreements “guaranteeing cooperation on security\, technology\, and intelligence.” \nWhat is your perception of the situation—the issues and\, more importantly\, your ideas for a solution? Please join us for a lovely discussion. \nDr. Cooks’s presentation is on YouTube; if you have time to watch it—please see the link below. \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INPW7p5m710 \n\n \nFor more details contact: \nEllen Murry\, Co-chair\, of the Globalist Coffeehouse: ellen.murry@yahoo.com \nPolina Anastassieva\, Co-chair\, of the Globalist Coffeehouse: polina@wacaustin.org

SUMMARY:WorldNow: America's Cold Warrior Paul Nitze and National Security
DESCRIPTION:Author James Graham Wilson joins us for another episode of WorldNow with Jim Falk on Paul Nitze\, America’s most influential national security strategist throughout the Cold War. \n“This book is not a stale history of an insignificant person. It is a well written\, fascinating story centered around a very influential man. It just happens that the man’s name is unknown to most\, even if his acts are not…America’s Cold Warrior is a book for the casual reader and policy wonk alike. If you enjoy history\, war\, or great biographies\, this book is for you.” – Global Security Review \nPurchase America’s Cold Warrior here | Buy on Barnes & Noble | Sundance Bookstore | Amazon \nThe details:\nWhen: Wednesday\, October 23 | 7:00PM ET \nWhere: Zoom Webinar \nTickets: No charge | Register for Zoom link \n \n\n\nAbout the Book\nAmerica’s Cold Warrior: Paul Nitze and National Security from Roosevelt to Reagan by James Graham Wilson \nIn America’s Cold Warrior\, James Graham Wilson traces Paul Nitze’s career path in national security after World War II\, a time when many of his mentors and peers returned to civilian life. Serving in eight presidential administrations\, Nitze commanded White House attention even when he was out of government\, especially with his withering criticism of Jimmy Carter during Carter’s presidency. While Nitze is perhaps best known for leading the formulation of NSC-68\, which Harry Truman signed in 1950\, Wilson contends that Nitze’s most significant contribution to American peace and security came in the painstaking work done in the 1980s to negotiate successful treaties with the Soviets to reduce nuclear weapons while simultaneously deflecting skeptics surrounding Ronald Reagan. America’s Cold Warrior connects Nitze’s career and concerns about strategic vulnerability to the post-9/11 era and the challenges of the 2020s\, where the United States finds itself locked in geopolitical competition with the People’s Republic of China and Russia. \nPurchase America’s Cold Warrior here | Buy on Barnes & Noble | Sundance Bookstore | Amazon \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Author\nJames Graham Wilson is a Historian at the US Department of State\, where he is currently responsible for editing volumes in the Foreign Relations of the United States series on arms control and national security during the Reagan Administration. In addition to America’s Cold Warrior\, he is also the author of The Triumph of Improvisation: Gorbachev’s Adaptability\, Reagan’s Engagement\, and the End of the Cold War. \nAbout the Moderator\nJim Falk is President Emeritus of the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth.
