Morton Award for Leadership\, and the Book of the Year Award from the American College of Health Care Executives. She comes to Dell Medical School from Dartmouth College’s Geisel School of Medicine and was previously on the faculty of the University of Virginia’s Graduate School of Business and the Harvard Business School. She earned an M.S. and a Ph.D. from the Stanford University School of Engineering. DESCRIPTION:The World Affairs Council of Austin\, in partnership with the University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business\, is proud to present the Texas Enterprise Speaker Series.\n \nValues matter in the workplace\, because they determine the frame that we place on the interactions that we have with others.  To put this into context\, it is important to understand the psychology of values and the role that these values play in the way people interpret the world.  We discuss this point in the context of negotiation and competition in the workplace.  Negotiation affects not only the particular outcome being discussed but also the relationships among people that determine what counts as the successful outcome of a negotiation.  We also explore the role of values in determining broader issues in the workplace like work-life balance\, and the responsibility companies have to the society around them. \nAttendees will learn: \n\nHow values of an organization affect individual behavior\nWhat is a protected value\nHow values affect preferences and beliefs\nWhat can leaders do to share their vision for the future with an organization\n\nSHORT BIOS \nArt Markman\n \nArt Markman is the Anabel Irion Worsham Centennial Professor of Psychology and Marketing at the University of Texas at Austin and Founding Director of the Program in the Human Dimensions of Organizations.  Art has written over 150 papers on topics including reasoning\, decision making\, and motivation. \nHe brings insights from cognitive science to a broader audience through his blogs at Psychology Today and Fast Company as well as his radio show/podcast Two Guys on Your Head (co-hosted with Bob Duke).  He has written several books including Smart Thinking\, Smart Change\, Habits of Leadership.  His most recent book is Brain Briefs\, co-authored with Bob Duke. \nBob Duke\nBob Duke is the Marlene and Morton Meyerson Centennial Professor and Head of Music and Human Learning at The University of Texas at Austin\, where he is University and University of Texas System Distinguished Teaching Professor\, Elizabeth Shatto Massey Distinguished Fellow in Teacher Education\, and Director of the Center for Music Learning. He is also a clinical professor in the Dell Medical School. A former studio musician and public school music teacher\, he has worked closely with children at-risk\, both in the public schools and through the juvenile justice system. He is the author of Scribe 4 behavior analysis software\, and his most recent books are Intelligent Music Teaching: Essays on the Core Principles of Effective Instruction\, The Habits of Musicianship\, which he co-authored with Jim Byo of Louisiana State University\, and Brain Briefs\, which he co-authored with Art Markman\, his co-host on the public radio program and podcast Two Guys on Your Head\, produced by KUT Radio in Austin. \nRebecca McInroy\nRebecca McInroy is an award-winning host\, show creator\, and executive producer\, who produces a wide range of content for KUT\, KUTX and KUT.ORG.\nRebecca believes it is important that Public Media directly connects with the community it serves. Many of her programs combine the talent\, and knowledge of the Austin community\, with the production arm of KUT/X Public Media to produce content that bridges the gap between the general public and higher education. \nShe can be heard co-hosting the fortnightly food politics podcast The Secret Ingredient with Mother Jones’ Tom Philpott\, and writer\, activist and academic Raj Patel. \nShe is also the executive producer and host of the live discussion program in Austin\, Texas Views and Brews where the topics range from the history of light and architecture to transgender issues\, and beyond. \nShe is the executive producer and editor of the national weekly radio program and podcast Two Guys on Your Head hosted by professors Art Markman and Bob Duke\, about human behavior and the brain. \nWith her most recent project she is the executive producer and editor of the audio documentary series Stuart Hall: In Conversations with host professor Ben Carrington about the life and legacy of the cultural theorist Stuart Hall. \nMcInroy’s other programs include: The Write Up with Owen Egerton; In Perspective; and Liner Notes. \n  \nRegistration cost includes lunch.  RSVP LINK BELOW. \n

SUMMARY:Disruptive Astronomy:  How Technology\, Serendipity\, and the Weirdness of Nature Have Changed What We Know About the Universe
DESCRIPTION:The World Affairs Council of Austin\, in partnership with the University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business\, is proud to present the Texas Enterprise Speaker Series. \nJoin us on 22 February for a presentation by Daniel Jaffee\, Ph.D.Vice President of Research; Professor of Astronomy\nCollege of Natural Sciences.\n \n“We had our Universe literally laid out in front of us in 1990…25 years later and it’s a whole new ballgame…people have had to change what they’re doing\, techniques they’re using\, and develop new instrumentation because the world is not what we thought it was.” \nThe history of astronomy since WWII has been one of new technologies opening new modes of discovery.  Radio astronomy brought quasars\, pulsars and the big bang.  Millimeter wave astronomy brought interstellar molecules.  X-ray astronomy brought black holes. The discoveries of the 1990’s – planets around other stars and the acceleration of the universe resulted from a combination of new techniques\, lucky observations\, and the astounding and unexpected properties of the natural world. \nThese discoveries spawned new “industries”\, massive efforts that now dominate the field\, and generated a drive for a whole range of new technologies to help us understand our origins.  Today’s astronomy thrives on innovation but faces many of the constraints and competitive challenges that businesses face.  I will discuss some of the latest work in the field and how it has responded to new technical developments and to the unexpected discoveries that make astronomy such an exciting area of study. \nAttendees will learn: \n• How post-WWII technologies opened new modes of discovery \n• What technologies astronomers use and how they work \n• The industries “discovered” by disruptions in astronomy \n• The constraints and competitive challenges that businesses and astronomers both face. What they can learn from each other. \nRegistration cost includes lunch.  RSVP via the event website link here or below. \nDaniel Jaffe is the Vice President for Research and Jane and Roland Blumberg Professor in the Department of Astronomy at The University of Texas at Austin. Prof. Jaffe received his BA and PhD from Harvard University and held positions as an Enrico Fermi Fellow at the University of Chicago and an Assistant Research Scientist at UC Berkeley before joining the UT faculty in 1986.  Jaffe’s research encompasses device development\, instrumentation\, and observations geared toward understanding how stars and planetary systems form and evolve. \nHis group constructs silicon diffractive optics using precision lithography and currently has devices on instruments for NASA’s SOFIA airborne observatory and James Webb Space Telescope (the successor to Hubble)\, as well as several ground-based instruments.  His team’s IGRINS spectrograph operates at McDonald Observatory and the team is now designing an instrument for the Giant Magellan Telescope.  Prof. Jaffe’s astronomical research employs high-resolution infrared spectroscopy to look at the properties of protostars and of the disks around them that are forming planets. \nProf. Jaffe has been awarded Harvard’s Bart J. Bok prize\, a Humboldt Fellowship\, and a David and Lucile Packard Foundation Fellowship.  He was Chair of UT’s Astronomy Department from 2011 to 2015. \n \n

Peter has over 30 years of experience conducting quantitative and qualitative research with many of the world’s top brands\, public causes\, and institutions. \nZandan founded IntelliQuest and served as its chairman and CEO for 15 years. Under his leadership\, IntelliQuest became the fastest growing market research company worldwide and was publicly traded on the Nasdaq (IQST). Zandan also founded and served as CEO of Zilliant\, a leading provider of price-optimization solutions that was named one of the top 50 venture-backed companies by The Wall Street Journal. \nZandan is a member of the Presidents’ Circle of the National Academy of Sciences\, National Academy of Engineering\, and Institute of Medicine\, in Washington\, D.C. Judson\, Stratfor’s editor-in-chief and head of content production. Judson oversees both the global network of the company’s information gathering researchers\, the forecast-making analyst team as well as the publishing team in Austin that crafts Stratfor’s work into written\, video\, and graphic form. Judson also oversees Threat Lens\, Stratfor’s premium and specialized service for corporate security officers. \nBefore joining Stratfor\, Judson worked for the Istanbul-based Dogan Media Group for eight years\, first as managing editor of the Turkish-language business daily Referans and later as editor-in-chief of the Hurriyet Daily News\, the company’s English paper. Before his work internationally\, Mr. Judson was a senior correspondent in Washington for Gannett Newspapers/USA Today. He and his wife Nermin have lived in Austin since early 2013. \n\nMine Yücel has been with the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas since 1989. Prior to becoming research director\, Yücel was head of the FRB micro/regional/energy group and director of publications. Yücel is an advisor to the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas president on regional and energy issues and has published numerous articles on energy and regional growth. \nYucel is a member of the National Association for Business Economics board of directors and was president of the International Association of Energy Economics in 2011\, an institution with 102 member countries. She is also past president of the United States Association of Energy Economics (USAEE). In 2006\, she was chosen as one of the recipients of the Key Women in Energy—Global Award. She received the USAEE Senior Fellow Award in 2007 and the Energy Journal Best Paper Award in 2009. \nBefore joining the Bank she was an assistant professor of economics at Louisiana State University. She has a BS and MS in mathematics from Bogazici University in Istanbul\, Turkey\, and a Ph.D. in economics from Rice University in Houston. \n \n\nJay C. Hartzell is the dean of the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin. He joined UT in 2001 after teaching at New York University’s Stern School of Business\, and prior to his current role\, he held several key administrative roles at the McCombs School. His most notable positions include his service as the senior associate dean for academic affairs\, chair of the finance department\, and executive director of the McCombs School’s Real Estate Finance and Investment Center. \nDr. Hartzell holds the Centennial Chair in Business Education Leadership and the Trammell Crow Regents Professorship in Business. He holds a B.S. in Business Administration and Economics (cum laude) from Trinity University and a Ph.D. in Finance from The University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on real estate finance\, corporate finance\, and corporate governance. His articles have been published in the leading journals in the field\, including the Journal of Finance\, Journal of Financial Economics\, Real Estate Economics\, and the Review of Financial Studies. \nDr. Hartzell serves on the editorial board of Real Estate Economics\, and he served as an associate editor of the Review of Financial Studies\, and as a member of the board of directors of the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association. In addition to his academic experience\, Dr. Hartzell previously worked as a consultant with Hewitt Associates.
