SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: The Middle East - Where are We Now?
DESCRIPTION:What is the region’s future\, starting with Gaza and the West Bank? What will be the role of the US and countries like Qatar\, Saudi Arabia\,  the UAE\, and Egypt? \nThe US has announced a 20-point plan for the region\, and at this time\, some would say that a ceasefire and the return of the Israeli hostages is perhaps feasible. However\, the more critical issue is where the region moves forward from there. The details in the proposal are often rather vague\, even aspirational. A cease-fire and hostage exchange is not necessarily peace in the Middle East. \nPlease join us for a lively discussion on what is currently essentially a fluid process.

SUMMARY:World Now: A Tale of Two Kings - Saudi Arabia\, Jordan\, and the Future of Power in the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman – de facto ruler of one of the wealthiest states in the Middle East – has positioned himself as a transformative leader. His rule is defined by economic and social change\, a close relationship with President Trump\, and concerns about human rights abuses and power consolidation. \nJordan’s King Abdullah II leads one of the region’s most economically challenged countries with a steady hand and traditional approach. His rule is characterized by alliance building and cautious political reform\, while also stifling political opposition. \nJoin us on WorldNow with Jim Falk for an inside look at two very different yet consequential leaders who are shaping the future of the Middle East – and redefining what it means to be king in the 21st century. With Pulitzer Prize-Winner Karen Elliot House\, author of The Man Who Would be King: Mohammad Bin Salman and the Transformation of Saudi Arabia and Aaron Magid\, author of The Most American King: Abdullah of Jordan. \n \nMeet the Authors\nKaren Elliott House is a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist with nearly five decades of experience covering Saudi Arabia. She is also a former executive of Dow Jones & Company and former chair of the Rand Corp. Her deep expertise informs her latest book\, The Man Who Would Be King: Mohammed bin Salman and the Transformation of Saudi Arabia\, which draws on more than half a dozen in-depth interviews with the Crown Prince himself. House spent over 30 years at The Wall Street Journal\, serving as a reporter\, editor\, and ultimately publisher. She resides in Princeton\, New Jersey. \n\nAaron Magid is a former Amman-based journalist and the author of the recently published The Most American King: Abdullah of Jordan. His analysis on the Hashemite Kingdom has appeared in Foreign Affairs\, Foreign Policy\, Al-Monitor\, the Atlantic Council\, France 24\, Al-Jazeera\, and the Middle East Institute. He hosts the podcast On Jordan. He obtained a Master’s Degree in Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University. \n\nMeet the Host\nJim Falk is President Emeritus of the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth. Now residing in Santa Fe\, NM\, he is Vice Chairman of the Board of Global Santa Fe. In addition to hosting WorldNow with Jim Falk\, Jim produces and hosts The Forum\, a weekly talk show on KSFR-FM\, Santa Fe Public Radio. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. \n\nAbout the Books\nThe Man Who Would Be King: Mohammed Bin Salman and the Transformation of Saudi Arabia by Karen Elliot House \nPulitzer Prize-winning reporter and former Wall Street Journal publisher\, Karen House has gained unprecedented insights into Saudi Arabia and its controversial leader\, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman through her more than forty years of experience covering the Arab kingdom. \nHouse reveals a leader who\, like Peter the Great\, is a reformer determined to modernize his kingdom but also an autocrat who jails political opponents and rival princes to assure his grip on power. Drawing on extensive interviews with the Crown Prince\, his royal relatives\, and his inner ring of advisors\, The Man Who Would Be King explains in full what shaped the man who is reshaping Saudi Arabia. It is an unprecedented and much needed in-depth portrait of the leader who\, at only thirty-nine\, will be a major player on the world stage for the next half century. \nGet a copy of The Man Who Would Be King on Bookshop.org to support your local bookstore. \n\nThe Most American King: Abdullah of Jordan by Aaron Magid \nThe first comprehensive biography on Jordan’s King Abdullah\, The Most American King details Abdullah’s rise to power\, survival amid protests from Jordanians\, and his efforts to cement an alliance with Washington. \nAaron Magid\, a former Amman-based journalist\, charts Abdullah’s path to power from a Massachusetts prep school to a British military academy to the throne\, and reveals how Abdullah has remained in power for over a quarter century. While leaders nearby were ousted during the 2011 Arab Spring protests\, Abdullah survived the wave of discontent. Drawing on interviews with over 100 of King Abdullah’s classmates\, former Jordanian ministers\, and CIA directors\, The Most American King offers a thorough account of this key Arab leader. \nGet a copy of The Most American King.

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: The Middle East – What is the Region's Future and the Role of the U.S.?
DESCRIPTION:Please join like-minded “global thinkers” for a monthly discussion on the major political/economic issues our world is experiencing. This month’s topic will be the Middle East. We will meet in the private dining room at 5280 Burger and Taphouse\, 7032 Wood Hollow Dr.\nThe Middle East – what is the region’s future and the role of the U.S.? \nThe Middle East is in a transition period with serious consequences beyond the region. From Israel’s war in Gaza\, Lebanon and the role of Iran\, Egypt\, the Emirates\, Saudi Arabia\, Turkey\, and even the Russians and Chinese\, the future of the region is uncertain\, especially the goal of a “two-state solution” given the Jewish settlements in the West Bank. \nLast month\, Dr. Steven Cook spoke to our WAC chapter on the Middle East in a Zoom program with WorldNewsNow. He is the author of the book “The End of Ambition: America’s Past\, Present and Future in the Middle East.” He suggests choosing priorities “based on interests that are achievable at an acceptable cost.” Dr. Cook recommends the phase-out of U.S. Military aid over the next decade while agreeing to treaties and agreements “guaranteeing cooperation on security\, technology\, and intelligence.” \nWhat is your perception of the situation—the issues and\, more importantly\, your ideas for a solution? Please join us for a lovely discussion. \nDr. Cooks’s presentation is on YouTube; if you have time to watch it—please see the link below. \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INPW7p5m710 \n\n \nFor more details contact: \nEllen Murry\, Co-chair\, of the Globalist Coffeehouse: ellen.murry@yahoo.com \nPolina Anastassieva\, Co-chair\, of the Globalist Coffeehouse: polina@wacaustin.org

SUMMARY:WorldNow: End of Ambition with Steven Cook
DESCRIPTION:What’s next for the U.S. in the Middle East? Join author Steven Cook\, senior fellow for Middle East & Africa at the Council on Foreign Relations\, in conversation with Jim Falk on what went wrong with U.S. involvement in the region\, and how the U.S. should reimagine our strategic interests in the Middle East amid a changing global order. \n“Cook demonstrates with terrifying clarity that the Middle East’s reputation for devouring the schemes and dreams of great powers is sending to more and is more often than not a place where grandiose American ideas have gone to die.” – Aaron David Miller\, Senior Fellow\, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. \nPurchase The End of Ambition here. \nThe details:\nWhen: Thursday\, August 1 | 6:00PM CT \nWhere: Zoom Webinar \nTickets: Free | REGISTER HERE\nWorldNow with Jim Falk is hosted by the World Affairs Council of Connecticut and Global Santa Fe. Presented in partnership with the Dallas Committee on Foreign Relations\, Phoenix Committee on Foreign Relations\, World Affairs Council of Albuquerque\, World Affairs Council of Austin\, World Affairs Council of Charlotte\, World Affairs Council of Colorado Springs\, World Affairs Council of Hampton Roads\, World Affairs Council of Jacksonville\, World Affairs Council of Orange County\, World Affairs Council of Western Massachusetts\, WorldOregon\, and Perspectives Matter. \nAbout the Book\nThe End of Ambition: America’s Past\, Present and Future in the Middle East by Steven Cook \nA clear-headed vision for the United States’ role in the Middle East that highlights the changing nature of US national interests and the challenges of grand strategizing at a time of profound change in the international order. \nFollowing a long series of catastrophic misadventures in the Middle East over the last two decades\, the American foreign policy community has tried to understand what went wrong. After weighing the evidence\, they have mostly advised a retreat from the region. The basic view is that when the United States tries to advance change in the Middle East\, it only makes matters worse. \nIn The End of Ambition\, Steven A. Cook argues that while these analysts are rightly concerned that engagement drains US resources and distorts its domestic politics\, the broader impulse to disengage tends to neglect important lessons from the past. Moreover\, advocates of pulling back overlook the potential risks of withdrawal. Covering the relationship between the US and the Middle East since the end of WWII\, Cook makes the bold claim that despite setbacks and moral costs\, the United States has been overwhelmingly successful in protecting its core national interests in the Middle East. Conversely\, overly ambitious policies to remake the region and leverage US power not only ended in failure\, but rendered the region unstable in new and largely misunderstood ways. \nWhile making the case that retrenchment is not the answer to America’s problems in the Middle East\, The End of Ambition highlights how America’s interests in the region have begun to change and critically examines alternative approaches to US-Middle East policy. Cook highlights the challenges that policymakers and analysts confront developing a new strategy for the United States in the Middle East against the backdrop of both political uncertainty in the United States and a changing global order. \nPurchase The End of Ambition here. \nAbout the Author\nSteven A. Cook is Eni Enrico Mattei senior fellow for Middle East and Africa studies and director of the International Affairs Fellowship for Tenured International Relations Scholars at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). He is an expert on Arab and Turkish politics as well as U.S.-Middle East policy. Cook is the author of False Dawn: Protest\, Democracy\, and Violence in the New Middle East. Cook is a columnist at Foreign Policy magazine. He speaks Arabic and Turkish. \nAbout the Moderator\nJim Falk is President Emeritus of the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth. SUMMARY:US Foreign Policy in the Middle East and the Changing Dynamics of the Region
DESCRIPTION:************UNFORTUNATELY DR. CASAGRANDA IS NOT FEELING WELL TODAY\, AND WE WILL HAVE TO RESCHEDULE THIS EVENT**********************\n  \nAbout Dr. Roy Casagranda \nDr. Roy Casagranda is a Professor of Government at Austin Community College (ACC). He is ACC’s Middle East Affairs expert. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. He is the founder and president of the Austin School\, lecture series. \nHis research interests lie at the intersection of politics\, history\, economics\, psychology\, and philosophy. He is a firm believer in a multidisciplinary approach. Circa 1025 A.D. Ibn Sina (Avicenna) said\, “The knowledge of anything\, since all things have causes\, is not acquired or complete unless it is known by its causes.” \nIn addition to his responsibilities at ACC\, from September 2010 until early 2012 he wrote regularly for Merhnameh\, a leading Tehran-based reformist socio-political monthly on US and Arab politics and history\, until the magazine was shut down by the Islamic Republic.  He has also written articles for Hamshahri and Donya-e-Eqtesad Daily newspapers in Iran.  In the US he has written for the Austin American Statesman on the Arab Spring. \nDr. Casagranda will have just returned from Saudi Arabia and Bahrain\, and consequently\, should bring a very interesting perspective on the Hamas-Israeli conflict. \n\nParking at Neill-Cochran House House Museum: Free in the museum lot\, accessible via 23rd between Leon and San Gabriel; additional street parking available.

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: Afghanistan - What’s Next?
DESCRIPTION:Please join like-minded “global thinkers” for a monthly discussion on the major political/economic issues that our world is currently experiencing. Due to the Delta-Variant\, this will be an online zoom discussion. Hopefully\, in the future\, we will be able to return to an in-person discussion at the Shoal Creek Saloon.  The topic will be Afghanistan. \n  \nOver the course of the last month\, we have seen the immense changes that have occurred in Afghanistan. To say that the withdrawal was not well managed would be an understatement. However\, there are a variety of complex issues that arise from this.  Can the Taliban even be trusted? What role do countries such as Iran\, Russia\, China\, Pakistan\, and even India have in filling in the vacuum our departure has created? How has this impacted the credibility of the United States? The President of France has asked the question:  Can the U.S. be trusted?  What about our ongoing commitments elsewhere in the world – from the Middle East to Asia? Finally\, there are the allies and comrades that we left behind. What is their future? \nFrom the state department perspective\, some have suggested that the lack of tours of duty sufficient to master the problems and the confusion of policy and implementation are both ongoing issues\, and not just for Afghanistan. For a more historical perspective\, others have cited an “imperial aversion to instability\,” from the British in 19th century Sudan\, to our own years in Vietnam. And now perhaps Afghanistan? \nHow will our Afghanistan experience impact our actions and foreign policy decisions in the future? \nPlease join us for what will be a very lively discussion. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor further information please contact: \nEllen Murry\, WAC Advisory Board\n\nellen.murry@yahoo.com\n\n\nPolina Anastassieva\, WAC management team\npolina@wacaustin.org \nWe have also included some suggested articles for further reading on this topic. \nhttps://foreignpolicy.com/projects/leaving-afghanistan/ \nChina\, Russia Look to Outflank U.S. in Afghanistan \nIntervention: Unlearned Lessons\, or the Gripes of a Professional

SUMMARY:The Globalist Coffeehouse
DESCRIPTION:Please join like-minded “global thinkers” for a monthly discussion on the major political/economic issues that our world is currently experiencing. \nInitially this event will be a virtual zoom discussion with break out groups. \nThis month’s topic will be:\nThe Middle East – Challenges and Opportunities.  \nWe now have a new administration which will face opportunities but also challenges in the Middle East almost immediately upon taking office. With Turkey\, we have a NATO member often aligning itself with Russia. In Israel\, we have territorial expansionism with domestic uncertainty. \nAnd then there is Iran\, where provocations abound – from seizing a Korean tanker in the Strait of Hormuz to increasing their uranium enrichment quota – in a response to US sanctions. While in Saudi Arabia and some of the Gulf States\, there is a rapprochement with Israel over the perceived Iranian/Shia threat. \nWhat should our priorities be in addressing these issues? Dr. Roy Casagranda\, with Austin Community College\, and an expert on the Middle East\, will join us initially and provide a brief context to begin what will be a very lively discussion.\nTo register and receive the zoom invitation\, please click here.\nFor more details contact: \nEllen Murry\, WAC Advisory Board\nellen.murry@yahoo.com \nPolina Anastassieva\, WAC Management Team\npolina@wac.org

The U.A.E. has a population of approximately 9.5 million\, out of which about 85 percent is expatriates. In 2015\, the U.A.E. registered a real GDP growth rate of 3.9 percent\, down from 4.6 percent in 2014.  Due to its vast oil wealth and relatively small population to which it must provide services\, the U.A.E. is well positioned to ride out the current low-oil-price economy.  To diversify away from oil\, the government is transitioning from an investment economy to a knowledge economy.  To this end\, it is focused on developing new industrial and commercial sectors\, including aerospace\, healthcare\, education\, and defense and tourism. \nThe U.A.E. is a leading commercial center serving the Middle East\, Africa\, and South Asia\, with a significant portion of its import volume ultimately being re-exported. Dubai in particular plays a central role as a regional trade\, logistics and tourism hub.  Its economy has also been buoyed by ongoing construction and infrastructure projects in the lead-up to the Dubai World Expo 2020.  While the construction sector has come under substantial pressure due to the prolonged slump in oil prices\, the sector remains resilient\, and Dubai’s planned real estate and infrastructure projects are progressing.  Most notably\, the expansion of the Al-Maktoum International Airport by Dubai Airport Authority\, valued at $33 billion\, is Dubai’s single biggest project.

SUMMARY:Iran - Post Sanctions
DESCRIPTION:With a population of 80 million\, a diverse economy and an incredible demand for all things new and luxurious Iran has been described as the next “big thing”.  However\, a year after reaching a deal to end some of the internationally imposed sanctions challenges prove as formidable as opportunities.  This is particularly true in the aviation sector where Iran tried to acquire close to 300 new airplanes placing orders with Boeing and Airbus. \nBe sure to register to learn more from Ali Dadpay\, PhD\, Advisory Board Member of the United States-Iran Chamber of Commerce (USIRCC).   USIRCC utilizes its strategic position to advance American and Iranian business interests within legal and regulatory parameters. \n  \n  \n
