SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: Aerospace and the Future of NASA
DESCRIPTION:The recent rescue mission that Musk’s SpaceX assisted with to bring the two stranded astronauts at the International Space Station back to Earth has led to a variety of questions about the future of Aerospace and NASA.With the increased privatization of the Aerospace industry\, what role will NASA continue to play?  Companies such as Firefly\, Icon\, and Umbra are all great examples of this trend. The question of funding in the private sector has shifted not just towards private capital but towards venture capitalists. Meanwhile\, the government sector is much more limited\, with fewer options such as grants or specialized programs. \nOne of the world’s most significant space events\, Space Business Week\, is held annually in Paris\, France. Taking this into consideration\, what is the best market or what market strategy should be implemented for the continuation of the growth of the aerospace industry? What about global competition in Aerospace with countries like China\, Japan\, and even Russia? With a massive expansion of the aerospace industry\, what lies ahead for funding and exploration?\n\n\nPlease join us for a lovely discussion.\nREGISTER HERE\nFor more details contact: \nEllen Murry\, Co-chair\, of the Globalist Coffeehouse: ellen.murry@yahoo.com \nPolina Anastassieva\, Co-chair\, of the Globalist Coffeehouse: polina@wacaustin.org

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: The Middle East – What is the Region's Future and the Role of the U.S.?
DESCRIPTION:Please join like-minded “global thinkers” for a monthly discussion on the major political/economic issues our world is experiencing. This month’s topic will be the Middle East. We will meet in the private dining room at 5280 Burger and Taphouse\, 7032 Wood Hollow Dr.\nThe Middle East – what is the region’s future and the role of the U.S.? \nThe Middle East is in a transition period with serious consequences beyond the region. From Israel’s war in Gaza\, Lebanon and the role of Iran\, Egypt\, the Emirates\, Saudi Arabia\, Turkey\, and even the Russians and Chinese\, the future of the region is uncertain\, especially the goal of a “two-state solution” given the Jewish settlements in the West Bank. \nLast month\, Dr. Steven Cook spoke to our WAC chapter on the Middle East in a Zoom program with WorldNewsNow. He is the author of the book “The End of Ambition: America’s Past\, Present and Future in the Middle East.” He suggests choosing priorities “based on interests that are achievable at an acceptable cost.” Dr. Cook recommends the phase-out of U.S. Military aid over the next decade while agreeing to treaties and agreements “guaranteeing cooperation on security\, technology\, and intelligence.” \nWhat is your perception of the situation—the issues and\, more importantly\, your ideas for a solution? Please join us for a lovely discussion. \nDr. Cooks’s presentation is on YouTube; if you have time to watch it—please see the link below. \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INPW7p5m710 \n\n \nFor more details contact: \nEllen Murry\, Co-chair\, of the Globalist Coffeehouse: ellen.murry@yahoo.com \nPolina Anastassieva\, Co-chair\, of the Globalist Coffeehouse: polina@wacaustin.org

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: Global Regulation on AI\, Cybersecurity\, & Data Protection
DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting in person in the semi-private dining room at the Shoal Creek Saloon\, 909 N. Lamar. This month’s topic is: \nGlobal Regulation on AI\, Cybersecurity\, & Data Protection \nPersonal data protection\, also known as data privacy\, is a holistic approach to system design that incorporates legal\, administrative\, and technical safeguards for personal health information (PHI) and personally identifiable information (PII). \nHow does data protection vary from country to country? What universal regulations do you find would be beneficial to implement across the globe? What about the constant evolution of global cyber-terrorism and hacking\, i.e. “Scattered Spider\,” “Lazarus Group\,” and even “Dragonfly\,”and the role of Cybersecurity? And then there is AI\, as it relates to Cybersecurity. The Global entities managing AI (UN\, EU\, ICC\, etc.) – who has and will have the ultimate control? \nShould data breaches be categorized as a crime with minimum time served? What measures have you seen or learned about that you would like to implement across the board? \nPlease join us at the Shoal Creek Saloon for what will be a very interesting discussion. \n \nFor more details contact: \nEllen Murry\, Co-chair\, of the Globalist Coffeehouse: ellen@wacaustin.org \nPolina Anastassieva\, Co-chair\, of the Globalist Coffeehouse: polina@wacaustin.org

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: Russia & China
DESCRIPTION:The Russia/China  “Strategic Partnership.” Its impact on the rest of the world. \nThe next Globalist Coffeehouse discussion will explore the Russia/China “strategic partnership” and its impact on the rest of the world.  Are we in a period of contemporary transitional global order? Both countries have their own internal and regional dynamics which should also be taken into consideration. Then\, there is also the stalemate in Ukraine and China’s relationship with countries in the South China Sea and North Korea. How does the shifting security landscape influence major geopolitical powers? \nThis will be a continuing conversation to the presentation by Dr. Sharyl Cross\, and her program on Russia and China\, on Wednesday\, April 17th at the Neill Cochran Historic House Museum. \n \nFor more details contact: \nEllen Murry\, Co-chair\, of the Globalist Coffeehouse: ellen@wacaustin.org \nPolina Anastassieva\, Co-chair\, of the Globalist Coffeehouse: polina@wacaustin.org

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: Climate and Global Change
DESCRIPTION:Climate and weather extremes have been called an “existential threat” to life as we know it.  What can we expect as the associated extreme weather and changing weather patterns threaten infrastructure and lives throughout the world?  What opportunities might exist for the role of transnational organizations such as the UN to address this crisis? Finally\, what about the EU\, China\, India\, the US\, and their leadership roles? \nThis is a follow-up conversation to a presentation by Dr. Dev Niyogi to the World Affairs Council on February 13th. Please see the link below to register. \n \n

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse - China: What next collaboration\, competition\, conflict?
DESCRIPTION:China:  What’s next – collaboration\, competition\, or conflict?\nWith China and the U.S. dominating the world’s economies\, what will China’s role be globally? There is China in the Indo-Pacific – the South China Sea and Taiwan?  What are the lessons learned from Putin’s war in Ukraine? Then there is “soft power” with the  Belt and Road Initiatives. What about China internally? There is the stagnation of the Chinese economy\, the implications of an aging workforce\, and a recent phenomenon called “lying flat.” There is also internal dissension with persecuted minorities/religious sects\, like the Uyghurs and others. \nThis Globalist Coffeehouse will be a follow-up to a joint program earlier this month with the World Affairs Council of San Antonio. This “China Town Hall” featured presentations by some of the most knowledgeable scholars on this topic.  Please join us for what will be a very timely and wide-ranging discussion.

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: Communicating with Pets Around the Globe
DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting in person in the semi-private dining room at the Shoal Creek Saloon\, 909 N. Lamar. This month’s topic is: Communicating with Pets Around the Globe \nRegardless of what nationality\, country\, or even religion we come from\, we all grew up having some type of pet in our households. Whether it’s a cat\, a dog\, a parrot\, a bunny\, or even a goat\, we all communicate with our animals. One interesting aspect of this subject is that it’s not necessarily in English that we talk to them; it might be Spanish\, Hindi\, Hebrew\, Italian\, or any other language for that matter. Pets adapt to whatever style of communication their owners use. So\, if you begin speaking to your animal in one language versus another\, they’ll most likely get used to it. For example\, we know that dogs listen to commands\, and it’s the intonation of the voice that tells them what kind of command it is\, however\, there is a significant difference between saying “Stay” in English versus let’s say in French. \nWhat are your experiences with your furry loved ones? Do they understand what you say in a variety of languages? Do they respond well to a particular one the most? Tell us about your international/multilingual communication pet stories. \nPlease join us at the Shoal Creek Saloon for what will be a very interesting discussion. \n \nFor more details contact: \nEllen Murry\, Co-chair\, of the Globalist Coffeehouse: ellen.murry@yahoo.com \nPolina Anastassieva\, Co-chair\, of the Globalist Coffeehouse: polina@wacaustin.org  \n

This month’s topic is: \nChina: What’s next?\nWhat will be China’s role in the global economy and geopolitics in general\, over the next decades? There is the South China Sea and the potential for conflict over Taiwan. But there is also “soft power” global influence. For example\, through the Belt and Road initiatives\, from the “Stans” to South Asia\, Africa\, and even South America. Of course\, there is also China’s relationship with Russia and Putin. And finally\, China has its own internal issues with the implications of the demographics they will be facing in the future. \nThis topic will be a follow-up discussion to the presentation by David Firestein on August 16th. We hope you will attend both events. \nPlease join us for what will be a very interesting discussion. \n \nFor more details contact: \nEllen Murry\, Co-chair\, of the Globalist Coffeehouse: ellen.murry@yahoo.com \nPolina Anastassieva\, Co-chair\, of the Globalist Coffeehouse: polina@wacaustin.org  \n

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: Healthcare Around the World and Your Own Experience – the Good\, the Bad\, or Rather Unusual
DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting in person in the semi-private dining room at the Shoal Creek Saloon\, 909 N. Lamar. This month’s topic is: \nHealthcare Around the World and Your Own Experience – the Good\, the Bad\, or Rather Unusual\nRegardless of what country we come from\, medical emergencies happen all over the globe on a daily basis. Healthcare policies determine if one decides to receive treatment in one particular country over another. The cost of living\, the government structure\, as well as insurance coverage can all be factors even for just a simple surgery of any kind. \nIn the United States\, for instance\, healthcare is privatized\, meanwhile in Switzerland\, it is regulated by Swiss Federal Law on Health Insurance. Yet in France\, it is universal\, which combines a more centralized and national government aspect. In Asia\, countries such as Singapore\, Hong Kong\, and South Korea also offer world-class services. And then there is Australia\, which is considered one of the top countries in the world for overall healthcare quality. \nWhat about your own experience when you got sick abroad? How was the doctor\, the healer\, the clinic and the hospital or even the dentist? What about the actual medicine? Were you treated with pharmaceuticals or traditional herbal medicines from that culture? What was the cost in dollars\, from a minor cut to a root canal or even a complex surgery? Tell us about your good\, bad or rather unusual medical experiences.

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: The Future of Warfare in the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting in person in the semi-private dining room at the Shoal Creek Saloon\, 909 N. Lamar. This month’s topic is: \nThe Future of Warfare in the 21st Century. \nThe wars of the 21st century – how will they be fought? In the last 20 years\, for the U.S. and our allies\, the focus was counter-terrorism and insurgency\, primarily in the broader Middle East. Now the focus is on great power competition – referring to Russia and China. With the outbreak of hostilities\, there would be massive cyber-attacks on both sides – jamming satellites and cutting vital undersea cables that carry data. We know that AI will also play a major role\, but in what capacity? \nWhat actions might initiate such a confrontation? What initiatives could prevent such an event in the first place? What is the future role of international institutions both humanitarian/economic and quasi-military\, from the UN and the EU to NATO and ASEAN? Some experts say that the solution is close consultation and collaboration with our allies in prioritizing the “right technologies” with the speed and scale to deter a great-power war. But given the difficulties in reaching a consensus for establishing priorities in democracies\, would we be able to transition in time? \nPlease join us at the Shoal Creek Saloon for what will be a very interesting discussion. \n \nFor more details contact: \nEllen Murry\, Co-chair\, of the Globalist Coffeehouse: ellen.murry@yahoo.com \nPolina Anastassieva\, Co-chair\, of the Globalist Coffeehouse: polina@wacaustin.org

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: The Future of AI
DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting in person in the semi-private dining room at the Shoal Creek Saloon\, 909 N. Lamar. This month’s topic is: \nThe future of AI\nArtificial Intelligence\, or AI\, technology has transformed how we live\, study\, what entertainment we enjoy\, and now it’s progressed into our jobs. Organizations that have added machine learning and cognitive interactions to traditional business models and processes can greatly improve user experience and boost productivity. ChatGPT or Google’s Bert for instance\, can produce summary analyses on a range of topics including writing computer code\, producing art\, composing music\, and even providing legal advice all in a matter of minutes to hours. \nAI has been around formally since the 1950’s when it was defined as a machine’s ability to perform a task that would’ve previously required human intelligence. But many are now issuing stark warnings. The co-founders of Center for Humane Technology spoke about their concerns stating that the initial thought of AI is to enrich our society\, cure diseases such as cancer\, climate solutions\, etc. However\, when it becomes an arms race versus actual thorough testing simply to have the machines deployed as fast as possible\, nothing positive will come from it. \nThe Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence warned the public of the risks AI brings and the need for stronger collaboration among the world’s leaders. In March\, a collection of tech officials\, scientists and policymakers signed an open letter calling for a 6-month moratorium on production of new AI models. If the private sector won’t do so voluntarily\, then they want the governments “to step in and institute a moratorium.” \nWe are at the point of a breakthrough technological advancement\, but what does it mean for the future? How will it impact society? With all the “risks” involved\, what role should government oversight play\, if any at all? \nRegister here to join us for what will be a lively discussion. \nWe look forward to seeing you there! \nFor more details contact:\nEllen Murry\, Globalist Coffeehouse Co-Chair: ellen@wacaustin.org\nPolina Anastassieva\, Globalist Coffeehouse Co-Chair: polina@wacaustin.org

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: What’s ahead for the global banking/investment economy and consequently governments?
DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting in the private dining room at 5280 Burger and Taproom\, 7032 Wood Hollow Dr. This month’s topic is: \nWhat’s ahead for the global banking/investment economy and consequently governments?\nLast month two banks\, Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank had to be “bailed out” with quick action by the Federal Reserve to stabilize the situation. There were other regional banks – like First Republic – “teetering on the brink” of financial failure and had to also be rescued. Finally\, there was the global banking situation with Credit Suisse being taken over by UBS\, while in Germany investors were watching Deutsche Bank. Many thought that HSBC may also be vulnerable\, impacting the economies in Asia. \nThere are several factors that may have contributed to the crisis. In the U.S.\, under the previous administration\, banking restrictions imposed after the 2008 crisis were removed for mid-sized regional banks. There was the role of “start-ups” and the “crypto sector” dominating a bank’s assets\, and finally the Federal Reserve’s policy of raising interest rates to reduce inflation. Similar situations also held for the global banking community. The pandemic\, the cost of the War in Ukraine\, and the disruption of global supply chains – especially food and energy – were all contributing factors at the international level. In the UK\, the implications of Brexit continue to be “a shock to the UK economy” and in the EU there is the economic stress of “shadow banks” (non-banking financial institutions). And last\, there is still the “contagion risk\,” where one institution or region could drag down the global economy. \nThe head of the IMF (International Monetary Fund) has said that “the global economy faces risks to financial security because of the turbulence in the banking sector.” So\, what’s next? How should this be addressed by the Federal Reserve in the U.S.\, and by institutions in the rest of the international banking community? After all\, it is a global economy. \n \nPlease join us for what will be a very interesting discussion. \nFor more details contact: \nEllen Murry: ellen@wacaustin.org \nPolina Anastassieva: polina@wacaustin.org

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: Horizontal vs Vertical - Food Supply Chain Throughout the World
DESCRIPTION:When we think of the world’s food supply chain a number of issues come to mind. Between recovering from a global pandemic\, to the ongoing war in Ukraine\, as well as the ever changing climate\, what does it mean to have a top to bottom approach in supply chain distribution as opposed to a horizontal approach? One requires work and cooperation from those above and below your position\, while the other one relies on working with your competitors.  \nLet’s consider some of the countries that rely heavily on rice and wheat as their main staple of food. China and India are ranked as the top two countries in the world for rice consumption. Meanwhile\, Egypt\, alongside Lebanon\, Tunisia\, Yemen\, Libya\, and Pakistan are the top buyers of wheat.   \n\nThe rise in prices for any product\, especially during international conflicts and with the impact of climate change\, is a common concept. However\, what happens when there is no subsidizing by a country’s government because there simply isn’t a supply at all? Perhaps there is a third alternative\, apart from horizontal and vertical? What about smaller\, private farmers that are able to self-sustain themselves? \n \nWe will be meeting in person in the semi-private dining room at the 5820 Burger and Taphouse\, 7032 Wood Hollow Dr. \nFor more information: \nEllen Murry\, Globalist Coffeehouse Co-chair: ellen@wacaustin.org \nPolina Anastassieva\, Globalist Coffeehouse Co-chair: polina@wacaustin.org

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: What’s next – U.S. international relations in 2023
DESCRIPTION:Please join like-minded “global thinkers” for a monthly discussion on the major political/economic issues that our world is currently experiencing. February’s topic will be:  What’s next – U.S. international relations in 2023? We will be meeting in the private dining room at La Madeleine\, 9828 Great Hills Trail. \nWhat are – and will be – the critical issues in the world of international relations for 2023? Of course\, there is Ukraine and the ongoing war. How will Russia proceed in the war? Will negotiations continue to be stalled or will peace eventually be restored?  What will be the Russian response to Finland and later possibly Sweden joining NATO? \nThen there is the tension over China’s increasingly assertive role in the Taiwan Straits and South China Seas. Will China be able to “manage/control” Kim Jong-un in North Korea? \nAnd in the Middle East\, we see Netanyahu’s ruling coalition’s aggressive position toward the Palestinians and the West bank. Moving on to Africa there are terrorist groups like Boko Haram and Al-Shabaab.  Finally\, there is Latin America with demonstrations on the left and right in countries from Brazil to Peru. \nWhat is your opinion? What will be the “next” challenge for the U.S.\, including some things not mentioned above or perhaps not yet even imagined? \nDo join us for what will be a very lively conversation. \n \nFor more details contact: \nEllen Murry\, Globalist Coffeehouse Co-chair: ellen@wacaustin.org \nPolina Anastassieva\, Globalist Coffeehouse Co-chair: polina@wacaustin.org

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: The Future of Cryptocurrency
DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting in person in the semi-private dining room at the Shoal Creek Saloon\, 909 N. Lamar. This month’s topic is: \nThe Future of Cryptocurrency \nAs we begin the new year and while there is a variety of cryptocurrencies out there\, one has been at the forefront of them all. FTX\, and specifically the founder Sam Bankman-Fried\, is facing eight criminal counts\, two of which include money laundering and conspiracy to avoid campaign finance regulations. This event has now been implicated in a downward spiral for the rest of the global cryptocurrency market – from Africa (Nigeria and Kenya) to Latin America (El Salvador) and Asia (Vietnam and Singapore). By November\, Bitcoin\, which is the world’s largest cryptocurrency\, had fallen around 65%. The entire fiasco has now been deemed as “Lehman moment” referencing the 2008 investment bank collapse. \nAre there any specific measures that should be taken in order to ensure this does not happen again? Will the crypto world learn that regulation does not equal unfairness? Certainly\, confidence in the industry has been shaken\, but it has also led global regulators to “tighten their screws if you will.” The risk is high\, and yet\, according to Changpeng Zhao\, who runs Binance\, the biggest crypto exchange\, regulations are necessary and should be done properly. He also agreed that the analogy comparison to the 2008 financial crisis was probably an accurate one. So\, what is the future of Cryptocurrency? \nPlease join us for a very lively discussion on a global phenomenon with real implications for the world’s economy. We also recommend a recent very informative PBS Nova program on this topic: Crypto Decoded. \n \nFor more details contact: \nEllen Murry: ellen@wacaustin.org \nPolina Anastassieva: polina@wacaustin.org

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: The Global Food Crisis - what are the solutions?
DESCRIPTION:As we enter a season of “culinary extravagance” we should perhaps think about the food crisis that is impacting people throughout the world. In 2021 acute food security affected 193 million people globally\, and in North Africa\, almost half – a million people are facing starvation and death. \nThe U.S. provides $2 billion annually or half of the world’s food aid. But our generosity is undermined by the fact that food aid must be purchased in the U.S. and transported on U.S.-flagged ships. While 25\,000 people are now dying daily of hunger\, the U.S. throws away 96 billion pounds of food each year – or 320 pounds per person. \nThere are several factors that overlap. Global food prices rose to new heights in 2021\, due to COVID-19 and supply chain disruptions. Around 21 million refugees face “conflict food insecurity\,” from North Africa to Yemen\, and most recently in Ukraine. \nThe temperate lands of the Global North have control over many primary commodities\, crops\, and minerals grown in the Global South\, through the control of seeds\, fertilizer\, and distribution. Russia and Ukraine together account for 33% of the world’s exports of wheat\, and Russia is the leading exporter of nitrogen fertilizers globally. \nAnd then there is climate change\, from devastating floods in Pakistan and typhoons in the Philippines to hurricanes in Central America. China has seen both drought and flooding\, leaving parts of the Yangtze unnavigable. Drought in North Africa and Yemen in the Middle East acerbates “conflict food insecurity.” \nWhat are the solutions? Certainly\, ending the war in Ukraine and shipments resuming from both there and Russia is a near-term option. Many others see a future in genetically modified plants; Bill Gates calls them “magic seeds.” Some believe that supporting and underwriting conventional breeding to improve crop yields\, is the future. With this process\, there has been a 50% increase in crop yields from 1981 to 2000 and it continues today. Finally\, many would say that we need another breakthrough like the one that produced the “Green Revolution\,” but those crops are dependent upon expensive fertilizers. At the present\, people are dying of starvation. \nPlease join us for what will be a very lively discussion about a subject critical to our future as a people and even a planet. \n \nFor more details contact: \nEllen Murry: ellen@wacaustin.org \nPolina Anastassieva: polina@wacaustin.org

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: Latin American Relations - Where is the U.S. now and what is its role in the future?
DESCRIPTION:Recently\, U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken toured Latin America to reaffirm its commitment to the allies amid concerns that neglect of the hemisphere has let China make economic inroads. He hopes that Latin America’s new leaders will continue to maintain a free-enterprise-friendly approach to nurture U.S. ties. \nMeanwhile\, many counties have their own challenges to consider. In Brazil\, everyone waits anxiously to see what will happen with the country’s election results. In Venezuela\, a total of seven Americans\, five of which were held in captivity for over five years\, were recently released in a prisoner swap. In Ecuador\, prison gang violence has overwhelmed an under-resourced and overcrowded system leading to a state of emergency in three provinces. In Columbia\, peace talks between its government and the National Liberation Army are set to resume. In Chile\, the country just recently elected its youngest-ever president\, a former student activist. That is in addition to the fact that Peru is the number two copper producer in the world. \nWith an increasingly ambitious China\, the largest importer of goods and services from Brazil and Chile\, and the second largest from Argentina and Peru\, and the trend toward authoritarianism in this part of the world  (actually a global trend)\,  what are the options for the U.S. in the future?  How can we solidify our relationships with Latin American countries? \n \nPlease join us for what will be a lively discussion about a topic that evolves regularly. \nFor more details contact: \nEllen Murry: ellen@wacaustin.org \nPolina Anastassieva: polina@wacaustin.org

This month we are going to go a little “light” and perhaps not so serious\, but still with a “global focus” and most interesting. \nThe topic for September will be: \nA cross-cultural look at smoking – traditions\, and etiquette around the world. \nTo cease smoking is the easiest thing I ever did. I ought to know because I’ve done it a thousand times.  – Mark Twain \nWe are all aware of the health risks associated with smoking\, and while most governments take some kind of anti-smoking action\, there are many cultures around the world where smoking is almost expected\, especially if you happen to be male. \nSmoking rates vary greatly around the world. Countries in Asia have the highest rates. For example\, 47.6% of men in China smoke\, in comparison to 19.5% in the U.S.  Gender also plays an important role. In China\, only 1.8% of women smoke\, compared to 15% in the U.S.  72.6% of Indonesian men smoke\, in comparison to 8.9% in Ethiopia.  The cultural variations in smoking rates are substantial. \nSo how do different cultures smoke? What is the etiquette of smoking – from hookahs and pipes with flavored tobacco to even how one holds a cigarette? In Japan during the Edo period\, the elaborately decorated long-stemmed kiseru pipe was used to indicate wealth and status.  What about the predominance of certain brands?  For example\, clove-flavored cigarettes\, called kretek\,  dominate 90% of the Indonesian cigarette market. \nIn your time living\, working\, and traveling throughout the world\, what are some of your own observations\, and even experiences with smoking? Was sharing a cigarette with a stranger the first step in mutual hospitality and friendship? \nPlease join us at the Shoal Creek Saloon for what will be a very interesting discussion. \nhttps://GlobalistCoffeehouse-Smoking.eventbrite.com \nFor further information please contact: \nEllen Murry\, WAC Board Member\nellen.murry@yahoo.com\nPolina Anastassieva\, WAC Board Member\npolina@wacaustin.org\n

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: What is the future of the UN in the 21st century?
DESCRIPTION:Please join like-minded “global thinkers” for a monthly discussion on the major political/economic issues that our world is currently experiencing. We will be meeting in person in the semi-private dining room at the Shoal Creek Saloon\, 909 N. Lamar.  This month’s topic is:\n \nWhat is the future of the UN in the 21st century? \nWith an ongoing war in Ukraine\, post-pandemic recovery\, and a drastic climate change all around our planet\, the future of the United Nations isn’t something that particularly comes to the top of our minds. The UN was originally established post-WWII\, with the goal to prevent any future wars. The UN Charter was adopted on June 25\, 1945\, and took effect October 24th\, that same year.\n\nIt is made up of 5 divisions/components – the General Assembly\, the Security Council\, the Economic and Social Council\, the Trusteeship Council\, and the International Court of Justice. The UN is immune from the laws of the countries where they operate\, seeing it is impartial to the host and member countries.\n\nAs stated in its charter\, the primary role of the UN is to maintain peace and security throughout the world. Yet\, in the Afghanistan\, Iraq\, and Syrian conflicts\, the UN has been essentially irrelevant except for humanitarian aid. It has no role in the current China/Taiwan tensions\, and its forces in Africa have not been particularly effective.\nIs the UN irrelevant as many of its economic and national security responsibilities are handled by military and economic organizations – NATO\, the EU\, ASEAN\, and the QUAD in Asia? While they have a constructive role in the international trade (WTO)\, they are often simply ignored. Even the composition of the Security Council (countries represented) reflects a politically bi-polar world that doesn’t exist today. \nSome would say that the UN (WHO) has been effective with the distribution of the vaccine throughout the pandemic. It has also aided with the humanitarian food crisis caused by both the drought (climate change) and as a result of the war in Ukraine. \nWhat should the role of the UN be in the 21st century – especially with climate change becoming the greatest global threat? \n \nFor more details contact: \nEllen Murry: ellen@wacaustin.org \nPolina Anastassieva: polina@wacaustin.org

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse - Drones: The Future of Warfare
DESCRIPTION:Please join like-minded “global thinkers” for a monthly discussion on the major political/economic issues that our world is currently experiencing. We will be meeting in person in the semi-private dining room at the Shoal Creek Saloon\, 909 N. Lamar. \nThe topic this month is:  Drones: The Future of Warfare? \n\n“The introduction of unmanned systems on the battlefield doesn’t change simply how we fight\, but for the first-time changes who fights at the most fundamental level.” – P.W. Singer \n\nThere are several major reasons why drones are seen as the future of warfare: they remove the risk to our soldiers\, make fewer mistakes than other weapons systems\, and as technology improves\, drones will become even more precise and efficient. \nDrones save lives\, are low risk\, and have pinpoint accuracy.  They are as lethal as airplanes\, but at a much lower cost and don’t risk the loss of a pilot. They are used in surveillance\, reconnaissance\, and general military intelligence. Drones save time\, as they are always ready to be deployed. \nYet\, there are negative points to consider: drone warfare causes collateral damage\, as they can’t communicate with civilians for more detailed intelligence. When civilians are killed\, they see drones as an invasion force. Also\, they can be shot down. Some would say that when drone warfare becomes like video games\, it makes combat “too easy” and diminishes ethical decisions.  And finally\, what about a fleet of drones being taken over by an enemy? \nPlease join us for what will be a very lively discussion. If you should have the time\, you may want to watch “Eye in the Sky” with Helen Mirren. It focuses on the very real ethical issues associated with deploying drones and is an interesting examination of the military chain of command in drone combat. \n \nFor more details contact:\nEllen Murry: ellen@wacaustin.org\nPolina Anastassieva: polina@wacaustin.org  \n

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse - Cultural Festivals and Ceremonies You Have Experienced Around the World
DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting in person in the semi-private dining room at the Shoal Creek Saloon\, 909 N. Lamar. \nCultural Festivals and Ceremonies You Have Experienced Around the World\nThere is such a variety of festivals around the world that we have each enjoyed. From the New Year celebrations throughout Asia to music festivals\, and even specific cultural/ religious ceremonies – all are unique. For example\, Japan has a summer festival called Gion Matsuri\, with brilliantly decorated floats and everyone in costumes as they parade to a Shinto temple. It is over a thousand years old and was started to appease the gods and protect folks from diseases\, fire\, floods\, and earthquakes. In Belgium\, an incredible annual music festival called Tomorrowland is widely known for its intricate stage design and international DJ list. Then there is Holi Day in India\, a Hindu festival where folks celebrate the end of winter and the arrival of spring with music and by throwing brilliant colored powder all over each other. Closer to home\, throughout Mexico people celebrate “Dia de los Muertos.” \nThroughout your travels and time living abroad\, what are some of the most interesting and even “eclectic” celebrations you have experienced? What do they represent in the culture – religion\, politics\, social/economic issues? What was your favorite in the sense of shaping your perspective on that country? \nYou are welcome to share photos and wonderful memories. Please join us for what will certainly be a splendid/most epic storytelling evening. \n \nFor more details contact: \nEllen Murry\, WAC Advisory Board \nellen.murry@yahoo.com \nPolina Anastassieva\, WAC management team \npolina.ana@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse - Ukraine: What Next?
DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting in person in the semi-private dining room at the Shoal Creek Saloon\, 909 N. Lamar. \n\nThe topic for May will be: Ukraine: What next? \n“The Putin era is dead.” At least according to John Huntsman\, the former U.S. Ambassador to Russia\, 2017 — 2019. \nBut is it? Will Putin survive even once the “body bags” start coming home to small towns and villages across Russia or once the sanctions start impacting ordinary Russians? \nHow will the war impact both the EU and NATO? There is now the possibility of new members on Russia’s border. While our European allies are showing a strong united front for now\, with supplies and even ammunition\, what about in the future as winter approaches without access to Russian gas? \nWhat is the message to oligarchs in the former Soviet Republics? To counties around the world who have allied themselves with Putin and emulated his authoritarian style? And then there is China. How will Putin’s miscalculations\, and more importantly the Western response\, impact China’s future actions towards Taiwan? \nPleased join us for what will be a very lively discussion about a topic that is evolving daily. \n \nFor more details contact: \nEllen Murry\, WAC Advisory Board \nellen.murry@yahoo.com \nPolina Anastassieva\, WAC management team \npolina.ana@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse - International Waters: The Law of the Sea vs. a Country's Coastal Sovereignty
DESCRIPTION:***We are very pleased to announce that this month’s Globalist will be in person on Thursday\, April 21st\, 6:30–7:30 p.m.!! Please join us in the private dining room at La Madeleine’s located at 9828 Great Hills Trail\, Suite 650\, Austin\, TX 78759.*** \nInternational Waters: The Law of the Sea vs. a Country’s Coastal Sovereignty  \nWhen we refer to a country’s border\, we at least have a map as to where one country ends and another one begins. However\, how do we define those boundaries on water? \nInternational waters (high seas) do not belong to any individual country’s jurisdiction\, and all have the right to fishing\, navigation\, overflight\, laying cables and pipelines\, as well as scientific research. \nBeginning in the 1950s\, international mandates have come to govern who has sovereignty over a country’s coastal waters. The Convention on the High Seas\, defined “high seas” to mean “all parts of the sea that are not included in the territorial sea or in the internal waters of a State.”  This was used as a foundation for the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)\, signed in 1982\, which recognized exclusive economic zones extending 200 nautical miles. \nBut competition for natural resources and a military presence have led countries like China to create their own definition of its coastal waters’ sovereignty – the Nine-Dash-Line. This has led to serious tensions among China’s regional neighbors\, such as the Philippines and Vietnam. In the Arctic\, Nordic Nations have their own boundary issues\, with competition for resources with Russia. \nWhat are the implications of all this in the South China Sea\, but also for other countries with coastal boundaries? What will be the impact of climate change on coastal sovereignty?

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: Cybersecurity as a National Security Threat
DESCRIPTION:Cybersecurity has been called “one of the most serious national security threats facing the U.S.” It has been estimated that malicious cyber activity costs the U.S. economy between $57 to $109 billion dollars a year. \nWe have already fallen victim to cyber-attacks\, one example being the hacks and leaks targeting the 2016 elections. And then last year\, Russia used “backdoor” accesses to hack SolarWinds – located in Austin – and impacted approximately 250 federal agencies.  Another threat is artificial intelligence driving the speed of misinformation. For instance\, conspiracy theories around the pandemic. \nThe problem is not unique to America. Russia also uses misinformation to generate anti-refugee sentiment in the EU and undermine NATO. And just last week\, we witnessed the cyber-attack on Ukraine’s infrastructure and defense systems. They are not the only players in this game. Others such as Israel\, North Korea and China are also “hacking” the internet. \nHow and where will this issue be addressed?  The current administration has introduced the Cyber Diplomacy Act. It established the Office of International Cyberspace Policy under the State Department\, and invested $10 billion in IT and cybersecurity infrastructure\, which is an excellent start. But is it enough given the threat\, especially in relation to our total defense spending? So\, what is the future of cyber technology and how should the U.S. and the international community respond? \nPlease join us for what will be a very lively discussion.  Due to the Omicron-variant\, this will be an online zoom discussion. Hopefully\, in the future\, we will be able to return to an in-person discussion at the Shoal Creek Saloon. \n \nFor further information please contact: \nEllen Murry\, WAC Advisory Board\nellen.murry@yahoo.com\nPolina Anastassieva\, WAC management team\npolina@wacaustin.org\n
