Georgia is recognized as one of the easiest places to do business in the world. World Bank’s Doing Business 2019 report placed Georgia in sixth place in the Ease of Doing Business category among 190 countries. Prior to his appointment as Ambassador to the U.S.\, Ambassador Bakradze served as the State Minister of Georgia for Euro-Atlantic Integration. In that role\, he was responsible for the coordinating the Government of Georgia’s work on implementing key instruments of integration\, such as the EU-Georgia Association Agreement (AA)\, the Annual National Program (ANP) with NATO\, etc. He also coordinated Strategic Communication and European Assistance Programs for the Government of Georgia. Ambassador Bakradze’s career includes a number of notable and senior positions. He served as Ambassador to the Hellenic Republic and the Republic of Serbia (2012 – 2014); Senior Counsellor and Chargé d’Affaires  in the Republic of Finland (2008 – 2012); Head of First European Division\, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2005 – 2008); Counselor and DCM of the Permanent Mission of Georgia to the U.N. (2002—2005); advisor in the National Security Council of Georgia covering Human Rights\, Information and Analysis\, Law Enforcement Institutions (1997 – 2002); staff member in the press office for the office of the President of Georgia (1996 – 1997). Ambassador Bakradze graduated from Tbilisi State University with a degree in International Economic Relations and International Law. He speaks Georgian\, English and Russian.

He is also a clinical professor in the Dell Medical School. A former studio musician and public school music teacher\, he has worked closely with children at-risk\, both in the public schools and through the juvenile justice system. DESCRIPTION:The World Affairs Council of Austin\, in partnership with the University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business\, is proud to present the Texas Enterprise Speaker Series. \nJoin us on 22 February for a presentation by Daniel Jaffee\, Ph.D.Vice President of Research; Professor of Astronomy\nCollege of Natural Sciences.\n \n“We had our Universe literally laid out in front of us in 1990…25 years later and it’s a whole new ballgame…people have had to change what they’re doing\, techniques they’re using\, and develop new instrumentation because the world is not what we thought it was.” \nThe history of astronomy since WWII has been one of new technologies opening new modes of discovery.  Radio astronomy brought quasars\, pulsars and the big bang.  Millimeter wave astronomy brought interstellar molecules.  X-ray astronomy brought black holes. The discoveries of the 1990’s – planets around other stars and the acceleration of the universe resulted from a combination of new techniques\, lucky observations\, and the astounding and unexpected properties of the natural world. \nThese discoveries spawned new “industries”\, massive efforts that now dominate the field\, and generated a drive for a whole range of new technologies to help us understand our origins.  Today’s astronomy thrives on innovation but faces many of the constraints and competitive challenges that businesses face.  I will discuss some of the latest work in the field and how it has responded to new technical developments and to the unexpected discoveries that make astronomy such an exciting area of study. \nAttendees will learn: \n• How post-WWII technologies opened new modes of discovery \n• What technologies astronomers use and how they work \n• The industries “discovered” by disruptions in astronomy \n• The constraints and competitive challenges that businesses and astronomers both face. Prof. Jaffe received his BA and PhD from Harvard University and held positions as an Enrico Fermi Fellow at the University of Chicago and an Assistant Research Scientist at UC Berkeley before joining the UT faculty in 1986.  Jaffe’s research encompasses device development\, instrumentation\, and observations geared toward understanding how stars and planetary systems form and evolve. \nHis group constructs silicon diffractive optics using precision lithography and currently has devices on instruments for NASA’s SOFIA airborne observatory and James Webb Space Telescope (the successor to Hubble)\, as well as several ground-based instruments.  His team’s IGRINS spectrograph operates at McDonald Observatory and the team is now designing an instrument for the Giant Magellan Telescope.  Prof. Jaffe’s astronomical research employs high-resolution infrared spectroscopy to look at the properties of protostars and of the disks around them that are forming planets. \nProf. Jaffe has been awarded Harvard’s Bart J. Bok prize\, a Humboldt Fellowship\, and a David and Lucile Packard Foundation Fellowship.  He was Chair of UT’s Astronomy Department from 2011 to 2015. \n \n

In a diplomatic career spanning five decades\, he was U.S. ambassador to Israel\, the Russian Federation\, India\, El Salvador\, Nigeria\, and Jordan. From 1989 to 1992\, he was Ambassador to the United Nations in New York\, and he then served as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs. Earlier in his career\, he was Special Assistant to Secretaries of State William P. Rogers and Henry Kissinger. He also served in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserves.

He has served on many corporate boards and has founded or financed more than 40 companies\, which have launched more than 100 products and raised significant amounts of capital in both private and public markets. \nPrior to his appointment at The University of Texas\, he was in the venture capital industry\, ultimately founding AV Labs\, a fund affiliated with Austin Ventures. Prior to the venture business\, he was a software operating executive for two decades. This career included positions in sales\, marketing\, and general management. He was with Lotus (NYSE: IBM)\, joining the company shortly after its public offering. Adams was their first corporate sales representative and went on to be instrumental in the development and launch of both 1-2-3 for Macintosh and Lotus Notes. He founded and was CEO of Business Matters\, a venture-backed developer of financial modeling products that was acquired. He was an executive with Pervasive Software (NASDAQ: PVSW)\, a company he helped take public. \nDr. Adams holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University\, where he received their Outstanding Engineer Award\, a Masters of Business Administration from Olin School of Management at Babson College\, and a Ph.D. in Management from Capella University. He has taught in the MBA programs of The Acton School of Business\, Babson College and The University of Texas at Austin and is the recipient of numerous teaching awards. \nHe is an internationally recognized speaker on innovation\, commercialization\, and entrepreneurship. He speaks frequently on his pioneering work in Market Validation and has keynoted the Inc. 500 business conference\, international venture conferences\, and consults for numerous global 500 companies. His work has been covered in Business Week\, Forbes\, Fortune\, Money\, The New York Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, Washington Post\, on Bloomberg Radio\, Public Television and public radio’s nationally syndicated “Marketplace” program. \nHe is the author of A Good Hard Kick in the Ass: Basic Training for Entrepreneurs (Random House/Crown\, 2002)\, If You Build It Will They Come? DESCRIPTION:The LBJ School of Public Affairs\, and the Center for European Studies – the University of Texas at Austin\, in partnership with the World Affairs Council of Austin present a conference on Democratic Reform in Europe. \nThis conference will bring to Austin the leading figures of the new movement for Democratic Reform in Europe\, including the former finance minister of Greece and author of the global bestseller\, Adults in the Room\, Yanis Varoufakis\, the recent French presidential candidate\, Benoit Hamon\, the rising Labour MP from Yorkshire\, Chi Onwurah\, the former Vice Prime Minister of Poland\, Grzegorz Kolodko. These leaders will join distinguished academic experts including Kunibert Raffer (University of Vienna)\, Giuseppe Sacco (LUISS University of Rome)\, Brendan O’Leary (University of Pennsylvania)\, Jorge Uxo (University of Madrid) and Henning Meyer of Social Europe\, among others. \nThis is the fourth in a biennial series of Texas conferences on European issues\, which have in past years explored the crisis of the Eurozone\, the Greek crisis and the relationship of the South American Summer to European problems. It will engage senior American experts as well\, including Michael Lind\, Jeremi Suri and James Galbraith of the University of Texas at Austin\, Damon Silvers\, Policy Director of the AFL-CIO\, and Pavlina Tcherneva of Bard College\, a leading advocate of Modern Monetary Theory. \nAn additional  focus of this conference is the emergence of young leaders in addressing the European crisis. SUMMARY:Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is: Why What You Buy May Not Reflect Your Moral Values
DESCRIPTION:The World Affairs Council of Austin\, in partnership with the University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business\, is proud to present the Texas Enterprise Speaker Series. \nLooking at the world\, it’s easy to see that people — in general — are ethical. They give to charity\, help their neighbors\, love their children. And if you ask them if they’re comfortable with sweatshops\, child labor\, or animal testing\, it’s no surprise that most will say they are not. For example\, a recent (2013) ChildFund survey indicated that 77% of respondents would not buy clothing or other goods made with child labor. Contrast that statistic with the fact that the U.S. Department of Labor’s list of goods produced by child labor in 2014 comprised of 139 goods from 75 countries\, and that a large proportion of many popular goods (such as cocoa and diamonds) are made using exploitative labor. It is clear that there are inconsistencies between values and behavior. \nJoin us for lunch on October 25 as behavioral economist and researcher Julie Irwin\, a professor at the McCombs School of Business\, explores consumer behavioral patterns to help expose some of the reasons why people’s buying habits often don’t align with their values. \n\n What you will learn  \n\nUnderstand people’s economic behavior can be different from what they actually care about\nIdentify aspects of consumer situations that can lead consumers to be “bad”\nBetter align your purchases with values.\nSee how corporate marketers\, non-profits\, and political organizations can help guide people toward expressing their ethical values\n\n\n\nJulie Irwin is the Marlene and Morton Meyerson Centennial Professor of Business in the Business\, Government and Society and Marketing Departments. Prior to joining McCombs\, Dr. Irwin has taught at Wharton and the Stern School of Business at NYU. She received her Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from the University of Colorado and completed post-doctoral training in quantitative psychology at the University of Illinois. She has published more than 40 refereed journal articles and book chapters such as a chapter in Wharton on Making Decisions\, and a chapter in The Oxford Handbook of Business and the Environment. She has also published a number of articles in the popular press\, and in outlets such as the Harvard Business Review\, Forbes\, The Conversation (reprinted by CNN)\, Huffington Post\, and the Philadelphia Inquirer.
