DESCRIPTION:The World Affairs Council of Austin\, in partnership with the University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business\, is proud to present the Texas Enterprise Speaker Series.\n \nValues matter in the workplace\, because they determine the frame that we place on the interactions that we have with others.  To put this into context\, it is important to understand the psychology of values and the role that these values play in the way people interpret the world.  We discuss this point in the context of negotiation and competition in the workplace.  Negotiation affects not only the particular outcome being discussed but also the relationships among people that determine what counts as the successful outcome of a negotiation.  We also explore the role of values in determining broader issues in the workplace like work-life balance\, and the responsibility companies have to the society around them. \nAttendees will learn: \n\nHow values of an organization affect individual behavior\nWhat is a protected value\nHow values affect preferences and beliefs\nWhat can leaders do to share their vision for the future with an organization\n\nSHORT BIOS \nArt Markman\n \nArt Markman is the Anabel Irion Worsham Centennial Professor of Psychology and Marketing at the University of Texas at Austin and Founding Director of the Program in the Human Dimensions of Organizations.  Art has written over 150 papers on topics including reasoning\, decision making\, and motivation. \nHe brings insights from cognitive science to a broader audience through his blogs at Psychology Today and Fast Company as well as his radio show/podcast Two Guys on Your Head (co-hosted with Bob Duke).  He has written several books including Smart Thinking\, Smart Change\, Habits of Leadership.  His most recent book is Brain Briefs\, co-authored with Bob Duke. \nBob Duke\nBob Duke is the Marlene and Morton Meyerson Centennial Professor and Head of Music and Human Learning at The University of Texas at Austin\, where he is University and University of Texas System Distinguished Teaching Professor\, Elizabeth Shatto Massey Distinguished Fellow in Teacher Education\, and Director of the Center for Music Learning. He is also a clinical professor in the Dell Medical School. A former studio musician and public school music teacher\, he has worked closely with children at-risk\, both in the public schools and through the juvenile justice system. He is the author of Scribe 4 behavior analysis software\, and his most recent books are Intelligent Music Teaching: Essays on the Core Principles of Effective Instruction\, The Habits of Musicianship\, which he co-authored with Jim Byo of Louisiana State University\, and Brain Briefs\, which he co-authored with Art Markman\, his co-host on the public radio program and podcast Two Guys on Your Head\, produced by KUT Radio in Austin. \nRebecca McInroy\nRebecca McInroy is an award-winning host\, show creator\, and executive producer\, who produces a wide range of content for KUT\, KUTX and KUT.ORG.\nRebecca believes it is important that Public Media directly connects with the community it serves. Mr. Varadkar will also discuss Irish innovation at this year’s SXSW and how the Irish tech sector is increasingly impacting the US economy. \nLeo Varadkar was elected in June 2017 as Ireland’s youngest ever Taoiseach (Prime Minister). Born in 1979\, the son of an Indian father and Irish mother\, Mr. Varadkar personifies the dynamic\, youthful and diverse Ireland of today. He is one of the few LGBT Heads of Government in the world. Having studied medicine at Trinity College Dublin\, Mr. Varadkar qualified as a medical doctor but soon ventured into the world of politics\, in which he has risen rapidly to the leadership position he holds today. He heads a Government that is shaping the Ireland of the 21st Century\, a country at the heart of the European Union\, and an island at the center of the world. Mr. Varadkar is visiting the United States to further deepen and advance the bilateral relationship between the two countries; he will attend SXSW before meeting with President Donald Trump in Washington DC later in the week. \nMr. Varadkar is the only Head of Government speaking at SXSW in 2018. More than 4\,000 students participate and test their knowledge of international affairs\, global current event issues\, and foreign policy. The winning high school teams at each local competition is invited to participate at the national contest in Washington DC.  Our competition consists of 10 rounds of 10 questions about specific global themes. \nSchools can register teams of 4 students in grades 9 – 12\, however; the contest is especially relevant to students in World Geography\, AP Human Geography and Economics. \nAWQ is a terrific opportunity to engage students in global affairs in a competition against fellow high school students in the area.  We have had great success and participation in this event in past years and want to make it even bigger! \n \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The World Affairs Council of Austin\, in partnership with the University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business\, is proud to present the Texas Enterprise Speaker Series. \nJoin us on 22 February for a presentation by Daniel Jaffee\, Ph.D.Vice President of Research; Professor of Astronomy\nCollege of Natural Sciences.\n \n“We had our Universe literally laid out in front of us in 1990…25 years later and it’s a whole new ballgame…people have had to change what they’re doing\, techniques they’re using\, and develop new instrumentation because the world is not what we thought it was.” \nThe history of astronomy since WWII has been one of new technologies opening new modes of discovery.  Radio astronomy brought quasars\, pulsars and the big bang.  Millimeter wave astronomy brought interstellar molecules.  X-ray astronomy brought black holes. The discoveries of the 1990’s – planets around other stars and the acceleration of the universe resulted from a combination of new techniques\, lucky observations\, and the astounding and unexpected properties of the natural world. \nThese discoveries spawned new “industries”\, massive efforts that now dominate the field\, and generated a drive for a whole range of new technologies to help us understand our origins.  Today’s astronomy thrives on innovation but faces many of the constraints and competitive challenges that businesses face.  I will discuss some of the latest work in the field and how it has responded to new technical developments and to the unexpected discoveries that make astronomy such an exciting area of study. \nAttendees will learn: \n• How post-WWII technologies opened new modes of discovery \n• What technologies astronomers use and how they work \n• The industries “discovered” by disruptions in astronomy \n• The constraints and competitive challenges that businesses and astronomers both face. What they can learn from each other. \nRegistration cost includes lunch.  RSVP via the event website link here or below. \nDaniel Jaffe is the Vice President for Research and Jane and Roland Blumberg Professor in the Department of Astronomy at The University of Texas at Austin. Prof. Jaffe received his BA and PhD from Harvard University and held positions as an Enrico Fermi Fellow at the University of Chicago and an Assistant Research Scientist at UC Berkeley before joining the UT faculty in 1986.  Jaffe’s research encompasses device development\, instrumentation\, and observations geared toward understanding how stars and planetary systems form and evolve. \nHis group constructs silicon diffractive optics using precision lithography and currently has devices on instruments for NASA’s SOFIA airborne observatory and James Webb Space Telescope (the successor to Hubble)\, as well as several ground-based instruments.  His team’s IGRINS spectrograph operates at McDonald Observatory and the team is now designing an instrument for the Giant Magellan Telescope.  Prof. Jaffe’s astronomical research employs high-resolution infrared spectroscopy to look at the properties of protostars and of the disks around them that are forming planets. \nProf. Jaffe has been awarded Harvard’s Bart J. Bok prize\, a Humboldt Fellowship\, and a David and Lucile Packard Foundation Fellowship.  He was Chair of UT’s Astronomy Department from 2011 to 2015. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:The United States is the only country in the world opposed to the United National Climate Change accord. Despite President Trump’s decision to pull out of the agreement\, Austin is taking a lead in tackling climate change\, and we are fortunate to have a leading international expert on climate change to launch a new series\, “World Spins.” \nThe rest of the world\, including China\, India and the European Union\, reaffirmed their commitments. Challenging the federal decision\, 346 U.S. governors\, mayors – including Austin’s own Mayor Steve Adler — and struck a defiant pose\, the Federal government declined to make a commitment. \n“With the Paris agreement\, we finally developed a global approach to climate change that had the best chance of success. What we need is for the rest of the world and state and local actors in the U.S. to hold the line in the hopes that we will once again have leadership at the national level in the United States that recognizes the severity of the problem\,” said Dr. Josh  Busby\, an internationally-recognized authority on climate change and delegate to the last November’s Conference of the Parties (COP23) to the U.N. Convention on Climate Change\, held Nov. 6-17 in Bonn\, Germany. \nWhile climate change is often perceived as a partisan issue\, national security experts are taking a closer look at its implications. In written testimony provided to the Senate Armed Services Committee\, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis asserted that climate change is a driver of instability. Former CIA director James Clapper also stated that climate change contributes to instability\, and as population centers compete for dwindling resources\, governments will find it increasingly difficult to maintain order. \n“The security consequences of climate change include large-scale humanitarian emergencies that may require military mobilization to protect people from dying both at home and abroad\, as we saw after Hurricane Katrina and more recently after Hurricane Maria\,” Busby said. “We may also see climate change exacerbate social tensions and undermine political stability in conflict-prone countries around the world through its effects on rainfall and food production\, economic growth\, disasters and migration.” \n  \nDr. Joshua Busby\, an associate professor of public affairs at the LBJ School and a Distinguished Scholar at the Strauss Center\,  began studying climate and security in 2004\, is the lead researcher on a three-year\, $1.9 million Department of Defense (DoD) funded project called “Complex Emergencies and Political Stability in Asia” that explores the causes and dynamics of complex emergencies in Asia and options for building government capacity to prevent and respond to such situations. This project follows a similar five-year\, $7.6 million DoD-funded project in Africa called “Climate Change and African Political Stability” (CCAPS)\, on which Busby was a lead researcher. \n

He joined UT in 2001 after teaching at New York University’s Stern School of Business\, and prior to his current role\, he held several key administrative roles at the McCombs School. His most notable positions include his service as the senior associate dean for academic affairs\, chair of the finance department\, and executive director of the McCombs School’s Real Estate Finance and Investment Center. \nDr. Hartzell holds the Centennial Chair in Business Education Leadership and the Trammell Crow Regents Professorship in Business. He holds a B.S. in Business Administration and Economics (cum laude) from Trinity University and a Ph.D. in Finance from The University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on real estate finance\, corporate finance\, and corporate governance. His articles have been published in the leading journals in the field\, including the Journal of Finance\, Journal of Financial Economics\, Real Estate Economics\, and the Review of Financial Studies. \nDr. Hartzell serves on the editorial board of Real Estate Economics\, and he served as an associate editor of the Review of Financial Studies\, and as a member of the board of directors of the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association. SUMMARY:Invisible:  Surviving the Cambodian Genocide
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with the Kozmetsky Center at St. Edward’s University\, we will offer a lecture by Dr. Fran Pilch\, Professor Emeritus of the United States Air Force Academy.  Dr. Pilch’s lecture will incorporate insights from the course she developed for the Air Force Academy entitled “War Crimes\, Genocide\, and Human Rights\,” and extensive research included in her book released on this topic in 2017. \nDr. Pilch’s lecture will concentrate on the actual accounts of survivors of Pol Pot’s genocide which claimed the lives of an estimated two million people—more than one-fourth of the total Cambodian population. \nDr. Pilch served as a Fulbright-Hays Scholar in South Africa and a Fulbright Scholar in Mongolia\, where she taught International Law at the School of Diplomacy\, National University of Mongolia\, in Ulaanbaatar.  In 2011-12\, she was named the Case Carnegie Colorado Professor of the Year.  She was awarded her B.A. from the University of Connecticut and her M.A. and Ph.D. in International Relations from Yale University. \n  \n \n

He has been a visiting scholar to the law faculty of University of Holguin (Cuba)\, University of Belgrano in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and the University of Columbia in New York. His most recent works include authorship of a book “Inversiones extranjeras sostenibles” and an editorial\, “Las inversions extranjeras sostenibles en la litigacion commercial internacional: formas de solucion de conflictos” (Memorias – 14º Encuentro Internacional de Derecho Ambiental). He has also co-authored “La obligacion de alimentos en el Derecho internacional privado de la Unión europea” (Quantex\, Orense\, 2009\, pp. 271)\, and “Fundamentos de Derecho procesal civil internacional” (Quantex\, Orense\, 2009\, pp. 217).  Apart from being a permanent partner for the Caribbean\, Argentina Environmental Foundation (Fundama)\, he is a member of the Scientific Society of Constitutional Law of the National Union of Jurists of Cuba and of the World League of environmental lawyers. \n  \n\n \nDr. Margaret E. Crahan is a Senior Research Scholar and Director of the Cuba Program at the Institute for Latin American Studies at Columbia University. From 2007-09 she was the Kozmetsky Distinguished Professor and Director of the Kozmetsky Center of Excellence in Global Finance at St. Edward’s University\, from 1982-1994 she was the Henry R. Luce Professor of Religion\, Power and Political Process at Occidental College and from 1994-2008 the Dorothy Epstein Professor of the City University of New York.  She serves on the Executive Committee of the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights and is a member of the Boards of St. Edward’s University and the Latin American Program of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.  In 2013 she was recognized by the government of Brazil for her work on human rights.   Dr. Crahan has received grants from the Fulbright Program\, Social Science Research Council\, American Council of Learned Societies\, Open Society Foundations\, the Ford Foundation\, and the National Endowment for the Humanities\, among others.   She has visited Cuba over 50 times since 1973 for research.  Dr. Crahan has published over one hundred articles and books including Human Rights and Basic Needs in the Americas; Religion\, Culture and Society: The Case of Cuba; The City and the World: New York’s Global Future and The Wars on Terrorism and Iraq: Human Rights\, Unilateralism\, and US Foreign Policy (with Thomas G. Weiss and John Goering). \n  \n\nEmilio Morales is President & CEO of HAVANA CONSULTING GROUP (THCG and Tech\, LLC)\, a Miami-based consulting firm specializing in market intelligence and strategy for U.S. and non-U.S. persons doing business in Cuba. Born and raised in Cuba\, Mr. Morales was formerly the Head of the Strategic Marketing Planning Department for the Marketing Division for CIMEX Corporation\, Cuba’s largest state enterprise holding company\, with more than 80 subsidiaries across Cuba engaged in 35 different retail and wholesale businesses and annual revenues of more than US$2.2 billion. Prior to CIMEX\, Morales worked for the Cuban government on a range of bilateral projects in Argentina\, Canada\, Mexico\, and South Africa.   Recognized for his unique insights into the dynamics of the Cuban market and economy\,  Morales has produced dozens of related research papers and written over 50 articles on various sectors of the Cuban economy\, including remittances\, the market for mobile phones\, real estate opportunities\, tourism\, energy\, logistics and transportation\, health care services and biotechnology\, agriculture\, food industry\, retail opportunities\, sugar industry\, exports of rum and cigars\, and Cuba’s growing opportunities for entrepreneurs (known in Cuba as cuentapropismo).  He has also conducted several studies on the Cuban economic model\, including studies on Cuba’s internal economic consumption in various sectors (both at the state and non-state levels).  Morales is the author of two books: “Cuba: A Silent Transition to Capitalism?” (2009) and “Marketing without Advertising: Brand Preference and Consumer Choice in Cuba\,” Routledge Advances in Management and Business Studies\, 2011. \n\nJorge R. Piñon began his thirty-two-year career in the energy sector when he joined Shell Oil Company’s supply and transportation organization in 1975. He was president and CEO of Transworld Oil USA prior to joining Amoco Corporation in 1991 as president of Amoco Corporate Development Company Latin America. In this position Piñon represented the business development and joint venture efforts in Latin America between Amoco Corporation and state oil companies. In 1994 he was transferred to the downstream oil sector to serve as president of Amoco Oil de México and president of Amoco Oil Latin America\, based in Mexico City. He was a member of the board of INROADS de Mexico\, an organization developing underserved youth in business and industry and preparing them for corporate and community leadership. In 1997\, while vice-president and member of the board of directors of the American Chamber of Commerce of Mexico -AMCHAM-\, Piñon received the “Yiacatecutli” award for distinguished service in the promotion of U.S.-Mexico business relations. With international experience in business development\, joint ventures and relationship management in emerging and transitional markets\, and a network of senior energy contacts in Latin America; he is recognized as an independent analyst of regional energy issues\, as well as the geopolitics of oil and natural gas in Latin America. He has conducted research and country risk assessments as a Visiting Energy Fellow at the University of Miami’s Center for Hemispheric Policy (2005-2010) and at Florida International University’s Latin American and Caribbean Center (2010-2011) prior to joining the University of Texas at Austin in 2012. He holds a degree in International Economics and a certificate in Latin American Studies from the University of Florida\, Gainesville.

SUMMARY:Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is: Why What You Buy May Not Reflect Your Moral Values
DESCRIPTION:The World Affairs Council of Austin\, in partnership with the University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business\, is proud to present the Texas Enterprise Speaker Series. \nLooking at the world\, it’s easy to see that people — in general — are ethical. They give to charity\, help their neighbors\, love their children. And if you ask them if they’re comfortable with sweatshops\, child labor\, or animal testing\, it’s no surprise that most will say they are not. For example\, a recent (2013) ChildFund survey indicated that 77% of respondents would not buy clothing or other goods made with child labor. Contrast that statistic with the fact that the U.S. Department of Labor’s list of goods produced by child labor in 2014 comprised of 139 goods from 75 countries\, and that a large proportion of many popular goods (such as cocoa and diamonds) are made using exploitative labor. It is clear that there are inconsistencies between values and behavior. \nJoin us for lunch on October 25 as behavioral economist and researcher Julie Irwin\, a professor at the McCombs School of Business\, explores consumer behavioral patterns to help expose some of the reasons why people’s buying habits often don’t align with their values. \n\n What you will learn  \n\nUnderstand people’s economic behavior can be different from what they actually care about\nIdentify aspects of consumer situations that can lead consumers to be “bad”\nBetter align your purchases with values.\nSee how corporate marketers\, non-profits\, and political organizations can help guide people toward expressing their ethical values\n\n\n\nJulie Irwin is the Marlene and Morton Meyerson Centennial Professor of Business in the Business\, Government and Society and Marketing Departments. DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with the Consulate General of Mexico\, the Fiesta de Independencia Foundation\,  the City of Austin\, Univision\, the State Preservation Board\, and the Mexican American Legislative Caucus\, Austin’s annual Fiesta de El Grito de Independencia is a musical celebration and historical re-enactment of Mexico’s call for independence from Spain.  The event takes place each year on the South Steps of the State Capitol. \nThe Fiesta de El Grito was relocated to the grounds of the State Capitol and taken to a historic level of participation in 2013.  Last year’s event drew a crowd of over 10\,000. \nThis family-oriented celebration is alcohol free. SUMMARY:Russia & the West: Significance\, Challenges\, and Potential
DESCRIPTION:In collaboratation with the World Affairs Council of Austin\, the Kozmetsky Center will co-sponsor a conference on Russia & the West: Significance\, Challenges\, and Potential. Distinguished experts of the United States\, European\, and Eurasian academic\, policy and private sector communities will assess contemporary and future security and economic relations between Russia and the West. \nSpeakers will share perspectives on the importance of Russia’s bilateral and multilateral relationships with Western nations\, immediate and longer-term strategic interests and priorities\, economic and security aspects of Russia’s relationships with Western countries\, significance that should be assigned to values in defining these relationships\, and overall implications of Russia’s relationships with Western nations for the contemporary and potential emerging geopolitical world order. \nOpening Forum on April 25th from 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm \nBilateral and Multilateral Relationships on April 26th from 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm \nDimensions of Security & Economic Relationships on April 26th from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm \nThe program will take place in Jones Auditorium on the St. Edwards University campus.  No RSVPs necessary for these events.  Speaker and program information is available here.\nThis will be the third conference event on transatlantic security funded by a U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Program grant in cooperation with the Center for European Studies and Center for Russian\, East European\, and Eurasian Studies at University of Texas\, Austin.

The U.A.E. has a population of approximately 9.5 million\, out of which about 85 percent is expatriates. In 2015\, the U.A.E. registered a real GDP growth rate of 3.9 percent\, down from 4.6 percent in 2014.  Due to its vast oil wealth and relatively small population to which it must provide services\, the U.A.E. is well positioned to ride out the current low-oil-price economy.  To diversify away from oil\, the government is transitioning from an investment economy to a knowledge economy.  To this end\, it is focused on developing new industrial and commercial sectors\, including aerospace\, healthcare\, education\, and defense and tourism. \nThe U.A.E. is a leading commercial center serving the Middle East\, Africa\, and South Asia\, with a significant portion of its import volume ultimately being re-exported. Dubai in particular plays a central role as a regional trade\, logistics and tourism hub.  Its economy has also been buoyed by ongoing construction and infrastructure projects in the lead-up to the Dubai World Expo 2020.  While the construction sector has come under substantial pressure due to the prolonged slump in oil prices\, the sector remains resilient\, and Dubai’s planned real estate and infrastructure projects are progressing.  Most notably\, the expansion of the Al-Maktoum International Airport by Dubai Airport Authority\, valued at $33 billion\, is Dubai’s single biggest project.
