SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: US Currency & Its Global Influence
DESCRIPTION:In 1785\, the US adopted the dollar sign as its official currency. Just three years later\, in 1789\, the very first dollar bill was issued. By 1791\, Alexander Hamilton established the Bank of the United States. For over the last century\, the dollar has been a dominant force in international trade. \n\nAn interesting fact is that the most significant bill to have ever been produced was between December 18\, 1934\, and January 9\, 1935. It was worth $100\,000\, printed with the portrait of then-President Woodrow Wilson. \n \nDespite recent economic shifts and\, perhaps more importantly\, technological evolution\, the US dollar remains the global currency. What was the role of the dollar’s stability in the 20th century? What exactly made it much more appealing to other countries than their own currency? Most importantly\, what will be the status of the dollar in the first half of the 21st century and beyond? \n\nPlease join us for a lively discussion on such a vital topic.

SUMMARY:World Music as Soft Power
DESCRIPTION:Music is a versatile and significant tool in diplomacy\, serving as a universal language that crosses cultural and linguistic boundaries. Music also serves as a soft power instrument\, enhancing a country’s image and fostering a positive perception worldwide\, while also acting as a voice for social change. Mutual appreciation is fostered by platforms that allow different societies to share their artistic manifestations\, such as concerts\, music festivals\, and cultural exchanges. \n\nWhat are some of the trends in musical genres that are impacting cultural perceptions and politics across the globe\, from K-Pop and J-Pop to Reggae-ton\, Hip-Hop\, and Afro-beat? \nPlease join Paul Klemperer for a “sampler” of regional musical trends and their influence around the globe. \n \nPaul Klemperer was born in Boston and discovered jazz at an early age\, sneaking into smoky clubs by age 13. Paul earned his master’s in Ethnomusicology at the University of Texas in 1991. He teaches private and group classes in clarinet & saxophone\, jazz history & theory\, and issues in music & culture.  He also writes fiction and essays on a wide range of topics. Paul has produced five CDs and has toured nationally and internationally for over 30 years. He continues to divide his time between Austin and the road\, bringing his soulful saxophone sound across the U.S.\, Latin America\, Europe\, and Asia.

SUMMARY:Africa: The Good\, the Bad\, and the Ugly
DESCRIPTION:Former Ambassador Larry Andre\, currently with the L.B.J. School\, previously presented a program on Africa to the World Affairs Council. He will return to discuss a continent that has seen radical change in the very recent past. The media tends to focus on a continent facing civil war\, militant Islam/terrorism\, famine\, and even genocide. Is it an accurate portrayal? No. Many African countries offer stability and opportunity to their citizens. Professor Andre will briefly discuss a few positive examples. \nAmerican influence in Africa has suffered a setback due to the abrupt cancellation of USAID. Given the importance of some forms of foreign aid in advancing U.S. goals\, influence\, and interests\, Professor Andre will discuss how vital foreign aid functions can operate “post-USAID.” What should the U.S. humanitarian response be for global health\, development aid\, technical aid\, and security assistance? \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:WorldNow: The Future of Borders with Edward Alden
DESCRIPTION:Join your fellow World Affairs Council of Austin members for this WorldNow virtual conversation.  In its first few weeks\, the Trump administration announced sweeping changes to immigration policy – from mass deportations and a migrant detention center at Guantanamo Bay to suspending asylum and trying to restrict birthright citizenship. What is the cost of these policies – to citizens and noncitizens alike? \nCFR’s Edward Alden joins us on WorldNow with Jim Falk to explain the economic\, social\, and international impact of the new administration’s border policies and mass deportations. \n \n\nMeet the Author\nEdward Alden is Bernard L. Schwartz Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. Alden’s career spans more than three decades in journalism\, think tanks\, and academia. He was the bureau chief for the Financial Times newspaper in Toronto\, Canada\, and Washington\, DC before joining the Council on Foreign Relations in 2007. \nIn addition to his own books and articles\, he has worked with senior US policymakers on in-depth investigations of issues such as US immigration policy\, US trade policy\, border security\, and the future of work. Since 2019 he has also been a visiting professor at Western Washington University\, and he currently writes a column for Foreign Policy. \nMeet the Host\nJim Falk is President Emeritus of the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth. Now residing in Santa Fe\, NM\, he is Vice Chairman of the Board of Global Santa Fe. In addition to hosting WorldNow with Jim Falk\, Jim produces and hosts The Forum\, a weekly talk show on KSFR-FM\, Santa Fe Public Radio. Jim also hosts Perspectives Matter\, which airs weekly on KERA-Dallas (PBS). He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. \n\nWhen the World Closed Its Doors: The Covid-19 Tragedy and the Future of Borders by Edward Alden and Laurie Trautman \nA detailed exploration of the most sweeping government border closures in human history during the Covid-19 pandemic and the implications for the future of global mobility.\nIn When the World Closed Its Doors\, Edward Alden and Laurie Trautman tell the story of how nearly every country in the world shut its borders to respond to an external threat and explain how this global shock to the system ended up transforming state border policies around the world. \nThey detail the consequences of the COVID border restrictions – couples separated for years\, children blocked from reuniting with their parents\, container ship workers moving essential goods trapped at sea\, pregnant citizens barred from returning home – and explain why governments used their harshest containment measures on those coming from outside. \nThroughout\, Alden and Trautman focus on human stories to show the multiple impacts that states’ increasing restrictiveness has had – economic\, demographic\, social\, and political. And the fallout continues: governments left unchecked will continue to restrict borders with little regard to the collateral damage and disruption they cause. \nA sweeping overview of the re-bordering of the world\, both during and after 2020\, this synthetic\, wide-angle view of a singular shock to the international systems of travel and migration highlights why citizens need better protections and governments more robust guardrails. \nGet a copy of When the World Closed Its Doors

SUMMARY:Most Honorable Son with Gregg Jones: A Forgotten Hero’s Fight Against Fascism
DESCRIPTION:Join your fellow World Affairs Council of Austin members for the first WorldNow virtual conversation of 2025.  Author Gregg Jones introduces us to Ben Kuroki\, who enlisted following Pearl Harbor and eventually became the first Asian American and only Japanese American to fight in the Pacific theater during WWII. Ben’s vocal championing of anti-bigotry\, patriotism\, and honor spurred the Roosevelt Administration to reconsider the incarceration of more than 100\,000 Japanese Americans on the West Coast. \nREGISTER HERE \nWorldNow with Jim Falk is hosted by the World Affairs Council of Connecticut and Global Santa Fe. Presented in partnership with the Asia Society – Texas\, Alaska World Affairs Council\, Colorado Springs World Affairs Council\, Dallas Committee on Foreign Relations\, Phoenix Committee on Foreign Relations\, World Affairs Council of Albuquerque\, World Affairs Council of Austin\, World Affairs Council of Charlotte\, World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth\, World Affairs Council of Hampton Roads\, World Affairs Council of Houston\, World Affairs Council of Jacksonville\, World Affairs Council of Orange County\, World Affairs Council of Western Massachusetts\, WorldOregon\, and Perspectives Matter. \n\nAbout the Author\nA long-time foreign correspondent and investigative journalist\, Pulitzer Prize finalist Gregg Jones has covered civil wars and insurgencies in Asia and Latin America\, the fall of Asia’s two longest-ruling twentieth-century dictators\, and the early months of the U.S. war in Afghanistan. \nHe is the author of the acclaimed nonfiction books Honor in the Dust: Theodore Roosevelt\, War in the Philippines\, and the Rise and Fall of America’s Imperial Dream\, and Last Stand at Khe Sanh: The U.S. Marines’ Finest Hour in Vietnam\, which received the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation’s General Wallace M. Greene Jr. Award for distinguished nonfiction. \nAbout the Host\nJim Falk is President Emeritus of the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth. \n\nAbout the Book\nMost Honorable Son: A Forgotten Hero’s Fight Against Fascism and Hate During World War II by Gregg Jones \nThe first comprehensive biography of unjustly forgotten war hero Ben Kuroki\, a Japanese American farm boy from Nebraska who flew fifty-eight combat missions\, fighting the Axis Powers during World War II and battled racism\, injustice\, and prejudice on the home front.\nBen Kuroki was a twenty-four-year-old Japanese American farm boy whose heritage was never a problem in remote Nebraska–until Pearl Harbor. Among the millions of Americans who flocked to military stations to enlist\, Ben wanted to avenge the attack\, reclaim his family honor\, and prove his patriotism. But as anti-Japanese sentiment soared\, Ben had to fight to be allowed to fight for America. And fight he did. \nAs a gunner on Army Air Forces bombers\, Ben flew fifty-eight missions spanning three combat theaters: Europe\, North Africa\, and the Pacific. In between his tours in Europe and the Pacific\, he challenged FDR’s shameful incarceration of more than one hundred thousand people of Japanese ancestry in America\, and he would be credited by some with setting in motion the debate that reversed a grave national dishonor. In the euphoric wake of America’s victory\, the decorated war hero used his national platform to carry out what he called his “fifty-ninth mission\,” urging his fellow Americans to do more to eliminate bigotry and racism at home. \nTold in full for the first time\, and long overdue\, Ben’s extraordinary story is a quintessentially American one of patriotism\, principle\, perseverance\, and courage. It’s about being in the vanguard of history\, the bonding of a band of brothers united in a just cause\, a timeless and unflinching account of racial bigotry\, and one man’s transcendent sense of belonging–in war\, in peace\, abroad\, and at home. \nGet a copy of Most Honorable Son on Bookshop.org and support local bookstores.

SUMMARY:ONLINE Lincoln\, Democracy & The American Experiment with Princeton Professor\, Allen Guelzo
DESCRIPTION:Hosted in partnership with the World Affairs Council of Connecticut and Global Santa Fe\, the World Affairs Council of Austin invites you to this ONLINE event on Lincoln’s birthday with award-winning historian and author Allen Guelzo. Mr. Guelzo will join a conversation with Jim Falk on the American President whose firm and powerful beliefs in democracy guided him through one of the most tumultuous periods in American history – and how his beliefs continue to shape our country. \nAbout the Book\nOur Ancient Faith: Lincoln\, Democracy\, and the American Experiment \nAn intimate study of Abraham Lincoln’s powerful vision of democracy\, which guided him through the Civil War and is still relevant today—by a best-selling historian and three-time winner of the Lincoln Prize. \nAbraham Lincoln grappled with the greatest crisis of democracy that has ever confronted the United States. While many books have been written about his temperament\, judgment\, and steady hand in guiding the country through the Civil War\, we know less about Lincoln’s penetrating ideas and beliefs about democracy\, which were every bit as important as his character in sustaining him through the crisis. \nAllen C. Guelzo\, one of America’s foremost experts on Lincoln\, captures the president’s firmly held belief that democracy was the greatest political achievement in human history. He shows how Lincoln’s deep commitment to the balance between majority and minority rule enabled him to stand firm against secession while also committing the Union to reconciliation rather than recrimination in the aftermath of war. In bringing his subject to life as a rigorous and visionary thinker\, Guelzo assesses Lincoln’s actions on civil liberties and his views on race\, and explains why his vision for the role of government would have made him a pivotal president even if there had been no Civil War. Our Ancient Faith gives us a deeper understanding of this endlessly fascinating man and shows how his ideas are still sharp and relevant more than 150 years later. \nPurchase Our Ancient Faith here. \n\n\n\nAbout the Author\nAllen C. Guelzo is Senior Research Scholar at the Council of the Humanities at Princeton University. He is the author of several books about the Civil War and early-nineteenth-century American history. He is a recipient of the Guggenheim-Lehrman Prize for Military History and has been awarded the Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize three times. He lives in Pennsylvania. \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Moderator\nJim Falk is President Emeritus of the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth. Now residing in Santa Fe\, New Mexico he is member of the Board of Global Santa Fe where he chairs the program committee. Jim co-hosts Perspectives Matter\, a McCuistion Program\, that airs weekly on KERA-Dallas (PBS). He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse: The Global Food Crisis - what are the solutions?
DESCRIPTION:As we enter a season of “culinary extravagance” we should perhaps think about the food crisis that is impacting people throughout the world. In 2021 acute food security affected 193 million people globally\, and in North Africa\, almost half – a million people are facing starvation and death. \nThe U.S. provides $2 billion annually or half of the world’s food aid. But our generosity is undermined by the fact that food aid must be purchased in the U.S. and transported on U.S.-flagged ships. While 25\,000 people are now dying daily of hunger\, the U.S. throws away 96 billion pounds of food each year – or 320 pounds per person. \nThere are several factors that overlap. Global food prices rose to new heights in 2021\, due to COVID-19 and supply chain disruptions. Around 21 million refugees face “conflict food insecurity\,” from North Africa to Yemen\, and most recently in Ukraine. \nThe temperate lands of the Global North have control over many primary commodities\, crops\, and minerals grown in the Global South\, through the control of seeds\, fertilizer\, and distribution. Russia and Ukraine together account for 33% of the world’s exports of wheat\, and Russia is the leading exporter of nitrogen fertilizers globally. \nAnd then there is climate change\, from devastating floods in Pakistan and typhoons in the Philippines to hurricanes in Central America. China has seen both drought and flooding\, leaving parts of the Yangtze unnavigable. Drought in North Africa and Yemen in the Middle East acerbates “conflict food insecurity.” \nWhat are the solutions? Certainly\, ending the war in Ukraine and shipments resuming from both there and Russia is a near-term option. Many others see a future in genetically modified plants; Bill Gates calls them “magic seeds.” Some believe that supporting and underwriting conventional breeding to improve crop yields\, is the future. With this process\, there has been a 50% increase in crop yields from 1981 to 2000 and it continues today. Finally\, many would say that we need another breakthrough like the one that produced the “Green Revolution\,” but those crops are dependent upon expensive fertilizers. At the present\, people are dying of starvation. \nPlease join us for what will be a very lively discussion about a subject critical to our future as a people and even a planet. \n \nFor more details contact: \nEllen Murry: ellen@wacaustin.org \nPolina Anastassieva: polina@wacaustin.org

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse - Cultural Festivals and Ceremonies You Have Experienced Around the World
DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting in person in the semi-private dining room at the Shoal Creek Saloon\, 909 N. Lamar. \nCultural Festivals and Ceremonies You Have Experienced Around the World\nThere is such a variety of festivals around the world that we have each enjoyed. From the New Year celebrations throughout Asia to music festivals\, and even specific cultural/ religious ceremonies – all are unique. For example\, Japan has a summer festival called Gion Matsuri\, with brilliantly decorated floats and everyone in costumes as they parade to a Shinto temple. It is over a thousand years old and was started to appease the gods and protect folks from diseases\, fire\, floods\, and earthquakes. In Belgium\, an incredible annual music festival called Tomorrowland is widely known for its intricate stage design and international DJ list. Then there is Holi Day in India\, a Hindu festival where folks celebrate the end of winter and the arrival of spring with music and by throwing brilliant colored powder all over each other. Closer to home\, throughout Mexico people celebrate “Dia de los Muertos.” \nThroughout your travels and time living abroad\, what are some of the most interesting and even “eclectic” celebrations you have experienced? What do they represent in the culture – religion\, politics\, social/economic issues? What was your favorite in the sense of shaping your perspective on that country? \nYou are welcome to share photos and wonderful memories. Please join us for what will certainly be a splendid/most epic storytelling evening. \n \nFor more details contact: \nEllen Murry\, WAC Advisory Board \nellen.murry@yahoo.com \nPolina Anastassieva\, WAC management team \npolina.ana@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Globalist Coffeehouse - Foreigners: How do We Perceive Them?
DESCRIPTION:The next Globalist Coffeehouse will be on Thursday\, August 19th\, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in a “virtual zoom” format due to the situation with the Delta -Variant.\n \nSee below for the details. \nThe topic will be: Foreigners: How do we perceive them? \n“Travel is fatal to prejudice\, bigotry\, and narrow-mindedness\, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad\, wholesome\, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all ones lifetime.”– Samuel Clements \nTravel takes time and money\, something many Americans don’t have\, consequently what we know about the world – its geography and cultures – comes from the media. At best it is a National Geographic special.  Unfortunately\, too often most countries are not covered at all and when they are mentioned it is in the negative context of civil war\, coups d’états\, drought\, and famine. And this was before the pandemic. As a result\, Americans tend to form negative stereotypes that reinforce prejudices about a country and its people. \nWhat can we do to help overcome this trend?  Supporting more international cultural exchanges? Encouraging the mainstream media to focus more on what is “unique” about a country as opposed to “strange” or “backward and primitive?”  What about your own experiences living or traveling abroad which may have reinforced your pre-conceived perceptions or changed them for better or worse? Even in this country\, has a personal encounter with someone from another culture impacted your perception of that society? \nPlease join us for what will be a very lively discussion. \n \nFor further information please contact: \nEllen Murry\, WAC Advisory Board \nellen.murry@yahoo.com \nPolina Anastassieva\, WAC management team \npolina@wacaustin.org

SUMMARY:The Globalist Coffeehouse: The Global Rise of Populism - What Does it Mean for the World’s Democracies?
DESCRIPTION:Over the last decade\, there has been a rise in populist and authoritarian regimes around the world.  From the increasing influence of authoritarian countries like China to  the retreat of democracy across Eurasia and the former Soviet Bloc countries. You have Marine Le Pen and xenophobia in France and Modi in India where the rise of Hindu nationalism threatens Muslims and other minorities. The same trend is found in the Americas and Africa. \nRight-wing populism is not a monolith\, yet there are some common elements: nationalistic traits\, xenophobia\, a tendency towards authoritarianism\, opposition to immigration\, discontent with multi-culturalism/social liberalism and an anti-elitist message. \nSo what is the solution? How do democracies address this trend? While the focus of our discussion will be mostly global\, some would also suggest that recently even the U.S. has been experiencing a similar process. \nPlease join us for what will certainly be a lively conversation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more details contact:\nEllen Murry\, WAC Advisory Board\nellen.murry@yahoo.com\nPolina Anastassieva\, WAC Management Team\npolina@wacaustin.org
